Trying to Decide the Right Path for My Site

I have a sports website that I decided to narrow down the topics to only two teams in the local city I live near, Memphis, Tennessee. I am referring to the Grizzlies and the Memphis Tigers football and basketball programs for college. I am debating about having just one broad topic on the site, such as the NFL, so I won't run out of topics to keep the site updated weekly. Do you think having the NFL category and team-centered topics go together?

If your site is hosted with a service that allows multiple sites, like most do, then I would just make another site all together and have one for my local teams and one for the NFL. And from there you can add and create other sports sites, i.e. NBA, MLB, Nascar, etc. Then you can interlink sites where applicable.

I am not in the sports niche but I would think making these sites would be an excellent opportunity to promote programs like FanDual, Draft Kings, and Ceasars

Thanks for reaching out as well. That's exactly what the plan is going to be. I already have a domain set up and content ideas for the NFL-only site. The plan is to have two sites that are tailored to local teams and one that is for the entire league which is the NFL. I'll probably stop with those three.

I think this is a great idea, but wouldn't you need the sports
league's authorization to operate such a website?

If you have it already, that's fantastic.

No you do not. There's tons of sites out there that's based around the NFL. Pro football focus, Pro Football Network etc.

Of course you do, it is stated on the NFL website
in their Terms of Service. This is old news from
way back and applies to most corporations.

My question wasn't whether there were tons of
other sites out there that are based around the
NFL, but whether you need the permission of
the NFL (or any other sports leagues that are
being infringed) to operate such and if you had
            that authorization.

Your response implies that you do not.

People can do whatever they want, it makes
me no difference, but I would not develop a
network of NFL/NBA/MLB sites, without the
proper authorization, only to have the whole
            thing potentially shutdown or confiscated.

BTW, I am not a copyright expert, just an old
            web developer for 25+ years.

I wish you luck with whatever you are doing.

              .
I have been doing this since 2013, I have been credentialed to cover college bowl games, local teams, NFL events in the past and have never been contacted by the league with cease and desist letter. I'm on the NFL's distro which means that I received press releases whenever transactions such as suspensions, deaths to great players etc. They know who I am.

WHO IS your ideal avatar? WHO is the person which will be most interested in your sports content? What are they doing NOW? Where are they doing it?

This appears, although I may be wrong, to be one of those "build it and they will come" type projects.

What do you hope or better yet, PLAN to get from doing this project? Is the goal revenue? If so, then what and how does that happen for you?

You live in one of those ONE TEAM NFL states, the team even has the state's name...the Tennessee Titans. I think that would be good, along with the Grizzlies. And agmcall has given you a good idea, today, sports betting is huge. These companies love to sponsor local sports shows...so a PODCAST or YouTube channel would benefit you.

What is the INTENT of your site? Maybe, if you start there, we can help you fine tune the details of the how to go about doing it, eh?

Thanks for reaching out. Build and it will come? I'm already there in that aspect because they are already coming. Lol

Memphis-based content has brought me more engagement, revenue, and email subscribers than any other topic that I blog about. I'm just looking for a way to scale it. The NFL content on the site which is broad just does not do anything. That's why I am considering moving them to their own platform and starting over. I have considered Titans content for the site before but I prefer to keep things niched down to Memphis. Also, Mempians don't like anything that's associated with Nashville for numerous reasons. Lol

  • The ultimate question is which avenue will allow you to profit more? If i were you my answer would come down to which site format has the potential to make more money from the ways that you're trying to monetize it. Are you emotionally attached to a particular segment of the sports market?

The 2 subjects go together because they are related . Depending on what you want to achieve with your audience you can go broad on said subject matter and cover sub niches to get a positive out come .

No team is playing in the NFL right now so I would focus these summer months on my favourite sport:

    Baseball.

This is what your main focus should be on.

I remember i had a ticket website years ago, some of the best advice i could give is look at the competion, i always sign up to other email lists and do that even to this day, its always best to do research and look at what others do just to get ideas, obviously not do exact copy.

i think trial and error is the best way even probaly try out nfl category and team centred topics together and if it dosent work look at different option.

then there is a option that i am looking at the ai software the stories i have heard about content and what it can do is very powerful so that is a road u can look at too, and see if it can help create some good options for you.

why don't just one site on NFL and all the teams?

Whilst the NFL is very broad and will ensure you never run out of topics there's also a lot of competition for the general NFL topics including many major, well established, blogs and media sites.

And you might be able to find longtail keywords they aren't competing for but overall I think it'll be a tough niche to crack because of how competitive it is.

Going niche and focusing on the specific local teams would give you more of an advantage and shot at success IME because there will be less competition and probably few to no websites dedicated to those, making you the authority in the space because you're 100% focused on them.

This is assuming there's high enough demand.

I just quickly checked Keyword Research tool UberSuggest and it looks like there's reasonable search demand.

The Memphis Tigers alone have over 1,000 related keywords and the big keywords have high search volume, see the image below...

So, I would go narrow and focus on your local teams rather than a broad NFL based site - you'll have plenty of topics to cover and a lot less competition too.
