Mailing list help/suggestions needed please

I've just started mailing to my list more regularly, sending out free information as well as some paid links. It got me thinking about what is a "good" click through ratio for a mailing? I know there are lots of factors that should be taken into consideration and any help would be much appreciated.
I'm taking part in ad swaps at the moment to build my list faster. What are your most successful ways to grow your list?
