Looking for a payment system that allows the user to upgrade

I spoke to the PayPal people. They told me if someone rltried to update a subscription even with the same button they'd have two subscriptions. I'm going to be offering tiered updates and would like clients to be able to do this on their own.

Any thoughts would be great especially those based on experience.

The situation with PayPal is frustrating! Having two subscriptions for one update seems inappropriate in your tiered system. But if you insist on self-service updates, there are tricks. A different approach could be creating a custom code such as when your clients pick upgrade on your site; an invoice is pushed by that system via PayPal. The development costs would be needed here, but it could give users smoother experience.

The easiest way to do this where you can just go get a solution in 5 minutes or less with no hassles is to set up a membership component to your offer.

I like member mouse, but there are many. It will depend on whether you're using WordPress or something else. Check compatibility before purchase.

If you use WordPress and don't yet have a theme, you can get an all in one by going to Envato (Theme Forest) and searching for membership themes.

They will have some that are basically ready to go. You could just upload the demo content, swap it out for yours along with the images and be up and running in just a few hours.

With a membership site you would have levels (upgrades) named whatever you want. Example: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

And it all hooks right into PayPal, Stripe and others.

The members can upgrade any time they wish and it's EASY for them to do so.

    Have a great day, Patrick

Can anyone recommend some reliable alternatives to Stripe and PayPal? Preferably ones that don't automatically charge VAT.

You need to research this information online.

Back in the day before PayPal, if you wanted to process
credit card payments, you had to set up your own merchant
account and they weren't that easy to obtain.

PayPal made it easy for online merchants, such as eBay
      sellers, to accept credit cards.

If you cannot find a suitable alternative to PayPal and Stripe
you might consider setting up your own merchant account.

Those can also be found online or you can contact your
      bank about it.
