Meta description tags not showing on Google

Hi, am currently helping a friend with mortgage website and i noticed that google isnt bringing back the set meta description in the search engine results, but i noticed that the other competitor websites locally for the same niche are? I didnt design the website which is on wordpress and the current seo plugin is seo rank math, i always used to use yoast. Can anyone shed some light on this i did read Google now just chooses itself what to display on the search engine results but there must be a way to override this.

Thanks phil

Hi Phil, Abubakar's steps are all correct. However it's worth adding, Google does choose it's own meta description around 30% of the time, and there's nothing you can do to stop this. In theory the steps given will minimise the chances of this happening, but be aware Google may just choose a snippet based on your page content if they think thats a better result. (Spoiler - it usually isn't). So don't be alarmed if this doesn't work. It's something an SEO consultant might spot as something to fix when there might in fact be nothing you can do aside from following best practice. Let me know if you need any more help!

Thankyou for your reply is there an online meta description generator that will analyse the content of the webpage and write a more relevant meta description?

        Thanks phil

I would use Chat GPT or Gemini and feed in a summary of the page (or copy and paste the content) and ask it to write 5 meta descriptions based on it

Google often overrides meta descriptions if it finds that the provided one is either irrelevant to the user's search query or poorly optimized. It dynamically generates a snippet based on the page content and search intent.
