How to calculate number of visits per day for #1 rank on Google.

I have domain that is #1 on Google for "keyword1 keyword2" keyphrase.
This translates to ~50 organic visits per day.
Google keyword tool (GKT) says that "keyword1 keyword2" keyphrase generates 5,400 searches per month for USA or 6,600 searched per month globally.

So the keyword traffic estimate formula is:
visits per day ~=
number of searches per month for most high volume keyphrase (GKT) / 100

That is - if you rank #1 for the given keyphrase.

This of course is rough - but gives you some ballpark.

  • Gleb you do mention it's a rough estimate and I think we need to be really careful when extrapolating a single datapoint into a general rule.

That keyword tool applies to the whole Adwords network and includes impressions from partner sites that are not directly related to organic search.

I've seen this many times now, where Keyword Tool External reports good figures that encourage someone to push a site to number 1 in the SERPS, only to find a ghost town.

It always pays to do a sanity check with another keyword tool, even G's own Search-based keyword tool , which is tied solely to organic search results. (The address field is optional, just entering keywords is OK)

If these two results for a particular keyword are within an order of magnitude (i.e KWT might say up to 10x what sktool says) then I am more confident it's a real result, and not some anomaly of inferring organic search results from the Adwords network.

Sure, you say it's for ballpark, and that's fine, but I would still be a lot more comfortable with more like 20-30 examples that all generally agree.

Quick question - are all of the organic search hits you mention only for that particular keyphrase?

    Cheers,
    Phil
