IM newbie with an SEO question.

In using the strategy of "spying" on the competition for the keywords that I'm targeting, I found that one of them has a Links page in their menu with a list of link exchanges that they're with. Since this site is near the top for at least five keywords, I assume that Google is "rewarding" them for those links.

Here's where I run into a problem. I've heard in a few different places that you should completely stay away from using link exchanges for backlinks. I would normally abide by that except as I said, link exchanges seem to be helping a competitor of mine. Is it not logical that they would also help me for the same keywords?

Some opinions on this issue would be very helpful and much appreiciated.

I'm at that decision point as well.

My strategy has been to work for link exchanges for in niche sites that have decent PR while providing some value for my customers.

I think copying your opponents best links is a good idea, as long as you're building links that they cannot copy in return.
