Interesting Email from Frank "the tank" Kern

Reading one of Frank's email about the magic bullet system being reopened (yeah for us) and noticed his opt-out notice if you want to unsub to his emails.

Pretty interesting that he tells you - once you unsub you will be permanently unsubbed to all of his email and to proceed with caution. A lot different than most email unsub notices out there.

    I've always liked this.

He's triggering a feeling of danger (and not the good kind) about being removed from his lists, very clever stuff.

Maybe I'm the contrarian here, but the way that's worded would make me more likely to click to unsubscribe.

      Why?

Because I'll be unsubscribed from "all lists" just by clicking on "Opt out of email marketing." Oh, boy! No more VIAGRA spam! No more "school teacher reveals all"! No more married women looking for a date! No more spam! Sign me up, er, sign me off, er, unsubscribe me. Yay!

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

That's a really good point! I can see a lot of people thinking that too...

Frank Kern masterminded the Magic Bullet Launch I believe and used Mass Control through the entire process.

I have Mass Control 1.0 & Mass Control 2.0 and he practices what he preaches, and it clearly works.

Used it myself with great success.

I think it's meant to trigger a sense of imminent loss, and knowing Kern he has probably tested this out extensively before putting it out there, especially in such an important email. He's not the type of person who goes on "feelings" and "emotions" and "what he thinks", something that too many of us marketers are incredibly guilty of! Another thing that needs to be considered is that we simply CANNOT please everyone no matter what we do, you just have to take the most profitable route out there, knowing that you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.....

maybe his list(s) are just getting too huge? I say this as he has also
recently mentioned that his list is currently closed, and not taking new subscribers?!?!?

as with anything with Mr Frank? it is a sure thing that within 2-3 months?
other 'big' players will be copying his unsubscribe "warning"

Yeah....you got to hand it to Frank Kern. He loves to take little chances like that. Honestly I'd be a little hesitant to put something like that on my emails.

It's definitely clever, but it also comes off as a little combative which might rub some people the wrong way.

People who were about to click on the unsubscribe link. If they already made up their mind that they're leaving, I doubt he cares how they're rubbed. They'll either think twice about it or they wont. It's the ones who will that the message if for.

Actually, Frank Kern isn't the only one to do that - there's quite a few others who use the same wording.

Kern is a wizard of marketing nlp, there's nothing new about this.

But we all should learn from this and get aweber to enable
the option to change our opt out lines too. lol

You might also notice that the email was delivered via his Infusionsoft marketing automation app.

All emails from an Infusionsoft app have a default opt-out like this. Infusionsoft advises folks to create specific opt-out links for key functions: for instance you can create an opt-out link to be removed from a certain follow-up sequence or sub-list.

What you should note is this... EVEN if you opt out you are still in the database. The way Infusionsoft handles these opt-outs is to stop you from receiving any more "mass emails" from whatever sub-list or sequence you were in ... it DOES NOT stop the marketer from sending you a single, direct email. Remember, Infusionsoft is a multi-modal follow-up marketing system: email, letter, voice, fax, SFA and 3rd party integration.

Quick question... could you tell whether you got a single email or if you were part of a blast? Sneaky huh? And how do I know this??? I'm an Infusionsoft Certified Marketing Automation Coach and advise clients on the strategic and tactical application of that powerful solution. It also doesn't hurt that I have my own install of the Deluxe Infusionsoft application too.

Either way, Frank Kern is very good at his schtick and I for one have made thousands from applying the advice he and his buddy Jeff Walker, shares.

    Just my 2 cents...

Maybe you could advise these guys on how to actually get their email in the inbox. Imagine that?

Actually, the whole "slacker" thing comes pretty naturally to Frank. What you're seeing is pretty much exactly how he is in real life.

Of course, the guy is smart, and he's REALLY good at marketing, and he works plenty hard. But the reality is that he's a really chill dude. I go hang out with Frank in La Jolla probably four or five times a year... and most of the time we're talking about music, or surfing, or whatever - it's 95% hanging out and 5% business.

Frank understands consumer behavior and emotions as well as anyone. He incorporates it very well in his marketing. Kern knows exactly what he's doing.

There were threads here 6 months ago from people trying to find out how to get on his list.

He might not try to stop you from resubscribing, but from reading some of the threads, it's not exactly easy to find one of his opt-in forms

I think the whole point is to stop you unsubscribing in the first place

You can add people who unsubscribe to a 'suppression list' meaning they won't receive emails, signed up or not.

That probably isn't what he's doing, but it can be done.

I think Frank Kern has a way of understanding his audience and acknowledging their understanding of commercial emails and the dynamics involved.

When you opt-out email delivered by Infusionsoft, you can always opt-back in through Web Form, or Frank himself can turn you back into opt-in if he provides a reason that you opted in (manually).

Anyhow, just wanted to clear that up if anyone had questions. Let me know if I can help anytime. :-)

Well, if you really wanna opt-out after reading his unsubscribe link, all the better for him, since his list will get more targeted right now.

He wouldn't really want you on anyway since you wouldn't be a buyer.

Hmm...I guess I'm in the minority.

I've been on Frank's list for a while now and as a result, have seen several of his vids, read many of his emails, blog posts, etc. As a result, I've gotten kinda a notion as to what Frank's style is (and it doesn't take much). The thing I like about Frank (and something I've always tried to do in all my writing, be it articles, newsletters, emails, or whatever) is to put them very conversationally - so the reader could almost imagine hearing me say it. This is not only for the language itself, but for the personality.

It doesn't take much to get an idea of Frank's personality - he's got a real laid-back, campy, somewhat sarcastic style. And I'd argue that most people on his list know this.

To me, this kinda thing is just him working some of that campy personality into his emails. That's how I took it.

(As a similar example, he's also made similar campy-style remarks about having affiliate links in his emails re him making a "few bucks" if you click his link.)

    *shrug*
