Webhosts -locking down your account with a single SPAM complaint

I've been reading about building your lists and how to best market to them, however I've come across a disturbing caution that I'd like feedback on from others.

Apparently when you market to your list, and or have an affiliate network of your own, and you send out an offer to your list, I've heard that in the event that someone complains 'spam' that some webhost companies lock your account, and that you effectively have to fight tooth and nail often for months for them to release your account, and that this can cost you thousands in lost sales and business.

Does anyone in Warrior-land know who the best webhost companies are, that will actually check with you first when and if they receive spam complaint(s) rather than just shut you down without even checking with you.

I'm currently using Justhost as my webhost, and I havent really built a marketable sized list yet, so I'm not sure whether these guys are good or not, but if anyone knows who's good and who's not, that would be appreciated by me (and probably others)

    Warren, that's one reason most marketers use a list host rather than self-hosting their own mailing lists. It costs more, but it's safer and your sites won't be shut down.

    On second thought, if your site was shut down, that might cost more in the long run than paying a list host.

    I do self-host one of my mailing lists, but there's only about 400 on it and they paid to be on it, so I know they aren't going to report me for spam.

      I'm building my list through GetResponse. (I've really only just started in the last week or so, and have a handful of email addresses on there at present)

      Do I need to be concerned about any of the Autoresponder list building services as well? I mean do they ever shut people's sites down, or provide problems with possible spam.

      I'm just trying to structure my business the best way possible for the future, so that I dont experience any of these possible problems. Spamming is the last thing I'd ever want to do, but I do realise if you end up with affiliates promoting your products, it could possibly come back to haunt you.

    If you are NOT hosting your own AR software but using getresponse or any other well known AR provider - you don't have to worry about your site.

      If you are using a getresponse.com like service you will not have a problem. If you are using a third party mailing house you may have a problem if you do not use an optin list you received legitimately, but it will be a financial problem (fines), not a service interruption problem. If you use a hosting account you are FUBAR >Wink<

      What actually happens with the the third party services is you are allowed a certain amount of complaints based on the volume of the mail you send out. It is am obscenely low amount too incidentally. The third party service I used was 45 complaints for 100 million emails.

      If you are following the industry standard practices and getting legitimate opt ins, sending them content relevant to what they opted in for you will not have an issue. If on the other hand your nickname is "spamford wallace' and anti-spam organizations are gathering their forces to hunt you down.. well don't stay at my house.....

      Use getresponse. I do. The price is right and the service is good.

        So do the possible spam issues have anything to do with the webhosts that you use to host your websites, or only the autoresponder service you use?

        In terms of decent autoresponder services, which ones are the ones I should be considering using? Obviously getresponse is OK, I presume Aweber is OK, any others?

          None of the above

          When you host an autoresponder script on your webhost - that's when "spam issues" come up.

          If you already have getresponse, you are fine. Start building your list!

          personal preference. i like getresponse, others like aweber. The spam issues has nothing to do with the vendor actually, it has to do with the person running the list. If the message is on target for a list that wants to receive it you will be fine.

          many webhosts don't let you mass mail prospects with UCE.

    Yes, It's advisable to use autoresponder services like aweber, getresponse or norabot like third party services for mailing list purposes instead of using own site.
