do follow or no follow, that is the question...?

Or is it?

I am working on a very simple product for newbies - something that retells advice I paid for to use with a site that sells a physical product. And paid a lot.

I paid for keyword research, SEO advice and a tool, which is available to all for free, but the company I hired set it up for me and my partner to use. I have now built the same tool for my non-IM niche info business and for several of my clients who know nothing about internet marketing.

So, I am writing up the method as a pdf with a few short instructional videos. I know that many iinternet savvy marketers will be using something like it themselves but I haven't seen anyone actually doing this and relying on this tool.

I'll offer it as a WSO when it's done.

My question is this.

When promoting a site by blog commenting, forum participation (with sig links), etc, are you always driven to check whether the site you are on is giving you a dofollow link?

And if so, how do you do check?

The reason I ask, is that I don't. I know that I won't get a backlink if the link is nofollow, but there are so many other benefits to a comment with a signature.

I know that a lot of my traffic comes from people following those links through (whether they are giving me any juice or not) and I think my approach (in making my blog comments or forum posts informative) makes that worthwhile.

What do you do?

Ian

    Hi Ian,
actually even if they are no follow you still get a backlink count...just not with google. But yahoo and others will give you link juice. Also, I particular don't worry too much about no follow since I get visitors from the site I am posting on anyways

For me, I always check if it's NoFollow.

It's very simple with NoDoFollow, a great Firefox add-on to check if links on a website are DoFollow/NoFollow with a click.

@Zeze, all major search engines index NoFollow links, but these links does not pass any juice.

Let me ask you a question...

Is it better to have a do follow link from somebody's unknown blog, or a no follow link from a hot topic on Yahoo Answers?

I know which one I want.

      Thanks gents.

KansasDragon - I'd take the nofollow link from the blog with traffic and authority. Real clicks would ensue.

I'm using NoDoFollow and often end up looking at the code too. Great plug-in and now working on 3.6!

I spent a lot of time as a newbie thinking NoFollow was a waste of time - don't want others to be in the same position!

    Ian,
No follow and do follow means nothing at all.. Ignore it because it will not effect you one way or the other. You still get a backlink even if it is no follow.

What I do is, if I feel that my link should be placed on a site do or no follow, it still makes sense to place it there because its a site in my niche. Now, SEO isn't the only reason to drop a link on a site, if it's a popular blog, you can get some traffic from it... Just drop a link where you think it makes sense, do or no follow, it wont harm you.
