website flipping question....

ok so i'm looking into selling a few of my websites.

However i don't understand a few things....

I bought the domain and host them through godaddy, so transferring the domain is easy. However if i cancel the hosting and let the buyer set up their own hosting account all of the content will be lost.

How do people sell full websites with all of the content intact?

You chose the worst possible hosting for this. You need a backup of the site. In cpanel hosting, you would export the database and zip all the files and transfer the zip file and the database to the new owner. If they are newbies, I would install the site for them.

If you host with hostmonster or hostgator, you can host unlimited domains on one hosting plan. It's cpanel hosting so it's a breeze to backup and transfer your site to a new owner. Don't ask me how it's done with Godaddy. The last time I worked with Godaddy to try to transfer a site to a new owner, I called up Godaddy "support" and was told that they do not provide support for Wordpress ... adios.

If your site is wordpress based, you may have to do a little work when transferring the site over, as most shared hosts give custom names to databases. You'll have to enter new DB settings in the wp-config.php file.

Unless you are lucky enough to find a tech savvy buyer, you will need to transfer the site to their hosting for them. For wordpress, this involves exporting the database and copying off your files for your theme and any other things you have added.

Then you install wordpress over at the buyers hosting, import the database and copy over the custom files. Then setup any affiliate id's etc..

It's better to choose hosting that has cpanel and, I agree, godaddy is the absolute worst hosting to work with. Not intuitive at all and takes forever to get anything set up.

Most buyers will want you to help them but you may be lucky to get someone who will be willing to do it by themselves.

I have flipped many sites ( both on flippa and recently via skype ) but never been able to transfer the files. The buyers have been doing it by themselves and that is because I make them understand I can't do it before hand.

Dude. There are some videos on YouTube.

    Part 1:

This is an example of doing it in Hostgator, but the principle is the same

If you use cpanel hosting, moving a new website is a breeze. Established sites require a bit more work with redirections, etc... but that too is not that complicated.

It's also a great way to up the sale price and make some more money, as most buyers will happily pay you to move the site for them.

I've sold over 100 sites over the past 6 months and usually offer free transfers at the "buy it now" price, or provide a zipped backup of the site to the buyer to source their own installation.

Almost every time a site has sold below my BIN price on flippa, buyers have been happy to pay the difference to have the site moved for them.

I really recommend that you spend the time and learn how to do it.

Hey, I'm a drummer and I can do it!

    cheers

If it is a WordPress site go to Warriors For Hire or one of the outsourcing sites like oDesk etc., and hire a tech savvy person to do it for you. You can get it done fairly cheap.

If it is an HTML site, just download it via FTP and zip the files up and send them. I would suggest that you put the files on a disk and send them via mail with some kind of tracking, or UPS or FedEx, so you have proof of delivery, in case of any problems. Electronic files delivered can be an issue if there is a complaint from the buyer, therefore if you have the delivery receipt for the disk, you can prove that you delivered the product.

one CLEAN method is for you to purchase a separate hosting for different domain. find hosting that offer monthly payment. hostgator for example have good offer for the first month with code. just do some google. it will be a good idea to create a dedicated email just for the purpose. gmail and yahoo work fine.

then once the transaction completed you can just handed over the whole hosting + the domain transfer. there is no hassle of moving the hosting etc.

    hope this help.

The easiest way for me is to use FTP. You open your FTP (I use Filezilla..FREE) locate the files on yourwebsite.com/public_html, copy the files to your desktop, zip and send off to your customer.
I host websites and have done this a few times transfering websites between hosts. Hope this helps.
