As an affiliate...Would you rather promote free or paid products

8 replies
Before you give me the obvious answer, let me explain myself.

All things equal, if you had the choice to give something away for free or send traffic to a sales page, which would you rather do?

For example...

Offer 1 is a free giveaway with a one time offer that you get paid $25 on.

Offer 2 is a sales page that sells the product and you earn $25 per sale.

So if you sent the same 1000 visitors to each page, and 3% of them bought either way, which would you rather do?

I know some marketers like to give free gifts to their subscribers and list members, but others would rather send them straight to a sales page.

What are your guys opinions?

    I find that promoting freebie offers result in more traffic and more opt-ins for the vendor, but the conversion rate is usually lower because most of the people just want the freebie. You'll also get some people who may have bought but don't because they are in a freebie seeking mindset once they get to the website.

    I had more success promoting paid offers that I can presell. Especially if they have some type of legitimate scarcity involved with the offer.

    I'd prefer to promote products that my list will benefit from, free or paid doesn't matter too much as long as it's quality and helps people.

    Well I'd rather promote a real paid product as long as it's niche. If it's not same niche as my site I doubt I'd make any profits. I am newby affilater though so take my opinion with a grain of salt

      Thanks for the replies...

      @Ron

      Thanks for the insight. Do you see sending your subscribers to a free offer kind of like 'giving' your subscribers to someone else? My thought was that sending to a sales page immediately would possibly result in more sales, and less subscriber duplication. But on the other hand I know people always welcome free stuff.

      @Louise

      Indeed that's the most important thing to keep in mind. But if everything involved was high value and would help your subscribers, do you lean one way or the other? Or just neutral?

      Definitely welcome more comments, interesting to see other marketers opinions and viewpoints of these things.

        IHi,

        it's really up to what it is that you are trying to achieve with your project.

        If you are marketing the offer to your own list than you should have their pulse and knkow what kind of conversion to expect on a straight sale promotion. Yet again if you aren't sure what's best why not survey the list itself and ask them what they would prefer....

        The big fat cats of the industry make big bucks by giving specific free stuff right upfront to build interest and desire( see eben pegan "moving the free line" or frank kern mass control or jeff walker product launch formula...) and also segmentate their lists into more specific sublists...

        The fact is that it all goes down to what the list really need and what value you can offer them, and more important how they are going to respond to both methods.

        In my business i consider bonding with the list uber important and i don't like to massacre them with a loads of affiliate sales...
        Anyway i'm a big fan of pre-selling....so otpion 1.

      THE OP never mentioned anything about recurring commissions

    Everything being equal...i.e.
    1. It is something I would promote to my list.
    2. It is a quality product.
    3. It is something I believe in.

    I'm gonna promote the paid product...I can pre-sell it to my list much easier that a one-time offer after a freebee. Likely leading to a better conversion for me
