Well, if you like using Wine to run Windows programs in Linux, you'll have a better chance at finding applications.

Depending on what you're looking to do, you might be better off finding web-based services, or finding some good old open source software and running it on your webserver. That's what I try to do when I can.

And other than the "dual boot" that was previously mentioned, grab VMware Server or VirtualBlox and setup a Windows VM to run the Windows-based IM software on.

The only thing I can think of doing is using OnlyWire in Firefox. I'm not 100% sure it that service works anymore or not as I haven't used it in awhile.

Market Samurai works on Linux because it uses Adobe Air.

For other applications you can try Wine as someone suggests above. It works far better than you might think. They have an application database that will tell you how well particular apps work. You could try searching to find out how well it supports the apps you want to use: WineHQ - Wine Application Database

I think it would be really cool if the 9.x release of Ubuntu were called something like Ubuntu 9.0: Hungry Hippo.

Don't use ubuntu if you plan to go into this business. Very hard to find the IM software that can work with ubuntu.

Hardly any IM software runs under Linux. It's definitely a Windows dominated market. I highly recommend setting up Grub or Lilo to dual boot Windows alongside your main flavour of Linux. That's what I do.

Consider using a virtual machine as well. Windows 7 and Windows XP work great inside Ubuntu without much problems. This makes it easier because you can boot up VirtualBox, run Windows, and use your applications right there without having to leave your normal operating system.
