Hey guys,

I have a niche website that is getting basically all traffic from search engines and a little from Articles. It's had about 150 UV the past 3 days, not much I know, but it is 100% targeted traffic.

Anyway, I have made a little ebook and put it on the right sidebar, it is clearly visible on all pages above the fold.

What I want to ask is how I can get more signups? It's had around 12 in a month or so, not sure how long the opt-in has been up to be honest.

Is this achievable with one of the popups that come up as soon as you enter the page? Advertising the ebook and has an opt-in below it. If so, what is the best one for a Wordpress blog?

Do you see a drop in return traffic? Does it increase your opt-ins by a fair margin?

Open to other recommendations as well!

Thanks,
Daniel

The easiest way to get people to accept your free gift is to put the focus on it. I can't say for sure because you didn't provide a link so I can see the site itself.

You say you're on Wordpress, so some things I've done are:

    1. There's a plugin called "What Would Seth Godin Do" the shows new visitors a customized message - use this to tell them about your item. Tell them they can get it by subscribing or by leaving a comment, a neat trick for which you need:

    2. There's another plugin called "aweber wordpress plugin" (brilliant title, I know) but it's the one that allows signups to register with aweber when people leave a comment. Put a reminder there too, that if they check the box, they can get the freebie just by leaving a comment.

    3. A final plugin called "Comment Prompt" I believe. It will remind visitors after a few repeat visits to leave a comment. So if you have the above plugin, it's a way to get opt-ins through encouraging that route.

A popup sometimes works and sometimes doesn't - it depends on if the people in that niche are the kind that hate popups on principal.

You might also like to try one of those footer popups as well. Those are a bit more subtle, so if you don't have success with a full-on popup, you can try that.

    Hope that helps!

Fair warning: It's possible I'm arguing with you because I have nothing better to do.

Why don't you try John Chow's opt-in technique which is through the use of the Susbcribe Pop-up box? It's in a form of a lightbox that'll welcome your new visitors every now and then. What you'll do is only have it setup during your visitors' first visit on the homepage and then it will not pop again over the other pages so it'll not be interrupting the visitors. It surely worked for me as it doubled my readers now and also some of them turned as new batch of buyers so it's great.

I agree this will make a massive difference. Putting your opt-in on the side bar doesn't work (in my experience) I have tried it so many times. But the light box works nicely ... or at least have the optin form in the center of the page and BIG!

If you use aweber you can get a light-box with optional time delay out of the box with no real coding effort (other than pasting the javascript line into your HTML)

@mm1 - It's not a landing page, just a blog with an ebook featured on the right hand sidebar with an opt-in below it.

Simple, prob very obvious technique, but one I stumbled on after some tweaking. I increased opt-ins hugely on my squeeze pages by dropping the name field, in other words just requesting email address.

In terms of follow up conversions, this seems to have had no negative effects, as it might be thought to have for less commitment etc etc. More opt-ins and still more conversions.

Linda, you beat me to the punch! The reason this increases opt-ins is because psychologically, we are programed in todays society to be weary of handing out our names.

People will easily hand out their emails since they can be changed very easily. Many people do not like being addressed by their first name by strangers, some people find it quite manipulative when people use it in emails since they know the email they received was not written specifically for them, but a whole list of people.

        I found my opt-ins went up 10%

Interesting tip, thanks to both of you - I've put that into effect and will see how it goes.

It depends entirely on what your opt in box says and looks like - and what the subject / web site is!

    - Does it catch the user's eye when they first visit your site?
    - What compels them to provide their information? (An ebook graphic on its own might not explain to the user why they should provide their details)
    - What about the sign up button itself - does the text really explain what will happen when the user clicks it?

It's worth trying a few subtle changes periodically to split test your opt in box, and compare the results. You can quite easily achieve 30%+ increases in signups by simply changing text, changing button text etc.

The best way is to offer a really strong incentive for signing up to your list. Such as a great free report or something.

If indeed you provide valuable information for free, it'll increase your chances for more optins.

  • You can use my Slide-In Window which usually generates higher opt-in ratios than simply pasting your optin form on the sidebar: Slide PopUp Script
