Newbie here need suggestion

Hi there,

I need some help from fellow warriors! I would like to start in the self help niche. However I am thinking that I should scale down my niche first. So I am looking for suggestions of possible sub niches and what kind of keywords to target.

Basically, I like to write about motivation and inspiration to encourage people to get off their chair and finally take action. Looking forward to all the suggestions.

Thank you so much for your time. I really appreciate it loads!

Cheers.

You want to write about telling people how to take action and your question is for advice on how to take action?.... Are you sure you are qualified to write self help stuff?

        Why?
I am certain if he is not qualified he is qualified to learn and at the very least outsource.
Plus, self help is more opinion than actual fact. (Not including eating right and exercising of course.) What works for one may not work for another. And anyone seeking self help is open to most any ideas and assistance.

One suggestion might be setting your end goals and reverse engineering.
Start with the big picture then work down in your plan to the beginning.

Perhaps ask yourself "Are you doing this for the money or because it is what you like to do?"
If it is because you like it and it is a passion then go for whatever you desire. How are you going to know if you don't try? If you helped yourself before then you most certainly may be able to help others even if you don't have a PHD.

Don't ever limit yourself and think you cannot compete. Toss out the doubt and the feeling of being unworthy.
That is what makes the Internet great. It gives the little guys a chance to compete against the big dogs. Usually with more passion and a personal touch.

Any way you go I wish you the best of luck!
        Ken

PS: Listen to jbsmith. He is head on in what he suggests.

  • That is really broad.

Are you speaking from personal experience, or because you think it is a market where there is money to be made?

What you need to do is two things. (a) Do some research and find out what is already selling, and what people already need. (b) Decide if you will promote someone elses product or your own. Depending on which route you take, you will have subsequent methods of promotion, advertising, and building up your business.

It is more on interest. You know how you always tell yourself you want to slim down and start exercising, but the next thing you know you stuff that burger into your mouth. You tell yourself you want to do all these things but actually you never got yourself to do it. It comes from personal experience, reading and courses. For example, things taught by Anthony Robbins.

Everyone needs inspiration in their life, whether they admit it or not. My goal is to help them find their own inspiration in their lives. I am just confused what kind of keywords should I target.

Thank you for your advices. I shall keep them in mind.

Buddies, I will like to categorize your main niche ie 'Self help ' into several smaller divisions. More clearly I am telling to say that people nowadays will be happy to find some self motivational ebooks to boost their confidence . So if you can upload some nice Classic Self help books ie 'The magic of Thinking Big','You can Win','The Secret' etc via rapidshare or any good file sharing media and post the links in relevant forums ,discussions , You can get good traffic. Also try to update your stock everyday with new books. Pick meditation - perhaps the best self-help technique and post some quality posts on the matter and try to build backlinks, with little patience and experimentation you may find your site in decent position in Search Engines. Try to upload some free motivational Audio in your website and make it free. If the quality of the audio is Good, it may create link bait for you. Anyways, wish you very best .

Part of your answer can be found in how you are planning to monetize the site. What direction you take can be greatly influenced on particular products you are planning to promote or if you are just planning to do an adsense style site.

I would find some products first that you would endorse, and see where the focus lies in those.

Let's pretend I found some audio cassettes or cd's that have some hypnosis on them to help others overcome fear in particular. I now know I should look at some keywords like hypnosis, diy hypnosis, hypnosis cd's, hypnosis tapes, fear, overcoming fear, self confidence, etc - and I could go further to research what kinds of fears are the biggest - maybe fear of spiders? snakes? heights? All of these would make great article topics as well.

Anyway, go look at some products first. That may spark the direction of focus you want to go.

Actually, I have not taught about in what way I would want to monetize the site. It is just that I had read and learnt some empowering material that I would really want to share with the masses. I figured the best way would be setting up a site. Now my problem would be how to share what I have learnt to the people who wants to know.

I could go for the keyword 'motivation' or 'inspiration', but that seems ridiculous. Somebody correct me if I am wrong. I thank you all for sharing your insights and experience. I am here to learn. (:

Anyone read the book 'Man Search for Meaning'? What kind of niche would that book be in?

How about "What's Your Genius". I would think it is self development, but that seems way too broad for me.

Well, you can also think about book and product reviews. Books can be pushed via Amazon - but I'm not sure how well amazon based sites do as I've never done one so that would be something for you to look into.

Deciding your sales funnel and how you plan to monetize on the niche is just as important as the useful information you will supply to your readers.

Don't limit yourself to just clickbank.

So, I just googled "live coach affiliate program" and here are some results:

live coach affiliate program - Google Search

I was kinda surprised to see a blog with an article around coaching poker online, lol.

You are going to need to be more specific as to what kind of coach exactly.

Live coaches or people who do this typically charge a good amount of money and have their own thing in place. They also all seem to specialize in their own areas of expertise.

That's not to say that you won't find a program you want to promote. It may just take a bit of digging.

You have to do simple market research first to find out what people need, and what sells in that niche. A simple way to find out what sells hot in the self-help niche, go to clickbank marketplace. You can find popular products there in that niche.

As a next step, you should estimate the competition in that niche. A low to moderate competition is what you should look for. How to find it? To keep it simple, just type the keyword phrases that apply to that niche in Google and see the number of competing sites when the search result pages are displayed.

Depending on what you really want, you can choose the niche you want to serve. When it comes to writing in order to motivate others, you can incorporate that in the form of articles. You can either use a website or blog to promote certain products and make money. The articles will be accomplishing what you want i.e. inspiring other people.

Thank you for all your insights. I shall head over to Clickbank and see what I can find. Anyone knows what are the niches that 2 books that I mentioned earlier below to?

I have heard of the term "live coach", which niche exactly would a live coach belong to?

Thank you avenuegirl for your efforts and I appreciate it. I cannot believe you actually went ahead and did a google search for me too. Thank you!

I know all those live coaches have come a long way and built quite an empire. But I am pretty sure they all started small first and I am just finding what is that small step that they first took.

Its really great that you want to help and motivate people. My advise would be very careful with this niche, as a qualified psychologists there is a lot of stuff out there, not there isn't room for more :-). Human behavior is such a complicated area to get into also, and can get quite overwhelming. Maybe choose a small element of the self development area, such as stress management or mediation and become an expert in that. Good luck!

Thank you all for all your advices and help! Thanks for helping me scale it all down. I still cannot really figure out what kind of niche the books I mention belong to. Amazon.com puts it in the motivation category which is obvious too big for me.

Hmmm... you can perhaps start from the "productivity" sub-niche. Sites like Lifehack.org, have been doing great in the productivity niche. It doesn't require you to be successful but rather, finding out what things can help people to be more productive.

How about a forum on the subject in general

Have different boards for different subniches. Monetize the boards with adsense so they are topic sensitve and see which boards get the most hits

Hang out in the self-help, personal development forums and seek out the problems, challenges and questions that attract the most views and replies - this will give you insight into sub-niches with built-in interest and desire.

Weve done this ourselves for two products so far we have developed in the personal development field.
