Sales Double Standards

Ever notice how someone trying to sell something will freak out if you try to sell something to them? It only seems fair that if I give someone a respectful listening audience, they should do the same in return. However, that is rarely the case.

Maybe you are selling to the wrong people?

I'm not sure of the context in which you mean this. I can think of at least one in which it doesn't apply: When you (generic you) subscribe to a list, and treat the publisher as if they had just subscribed to yours.

I get this all the time. People sign up for the newsletter and then start sending me sales pitches. I'm not talking about one-off emails asking about working together, mind you. Those are a legitimate part of the process of running a high-visibility publication. I'm talking about plain old sales pitches.

It doesn't take a math wizard to figure out that this isn't a practical system. Even a relatively small percentage of my subscribers responding to each issue with a sales pitch would render that mailbox and feedback system useless.

Of course, this may have exactly nothing to do with what you're talking about, but it's one case where "works both ways" doesn't really work.

    As paul said,

If they are your subscriber, it is annoying to get pitches from them. If you are subscribed to my list it doesn't mean I am subscribed to yours. It really is annoying and spammy even

Me, I have no problem with someone trying to sell me something in return, especially if its someone who spent any of their hard earned money on anything I was offering.

I have never tried pitching to anyone on whose list I am subscribed. I only try to sell back to telemarketers when they're too persistent -- that sure makes them scram right quick.

Have you ever run a publication with a subscriber base in the tens of thousands? How many of those could you actually read in a given day, with any real attention to what they're offering?

This is a simple matter of limited time.

I will say that I quickly unsubscribe from anyone who is too high-falutin' to respond to me. I don't try to sell to them, though -- there are more lucrative and relatively untapped niches and target markets, so why bother.

Keep in mind that in many cases the email address that is used to mail out to subscribers doesn't actually receive e-mail. Some may have not responded simply because they never got your message.

As for telemarketers your story reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry asks the telemarketer for their home number so he can call them back later!

I saw that Seinfield episode and it was pretty funny. Especially when he said, "Now you see how I feel."
