Quick domain name question...

Probably will get variety of answers, but need some ideas:

example, not actual niche "painted lampshades" keyword gets about twice traffic as "painted lampshade" - but all "painted lampshades" domains are gone.

if i get paintedlampshade.com would that be a bad idea? still getting some decent traffic, but again the plural keyword gets double that (exact search) didn't know how much that "s" matters!!

i think you should get the singular because it will show up just the same as if you had gotten the "s" involved.

they all work the same when ranking them for keywords.

    Good luck!

    Hi Jenn

If the results 'really' do show that "painted lampshades" get twice as much traffic (I suspect most tools especially Google's) then I would first of all try for something like " great painted lampshades".

    Kind regards
    John

Yeah, as I said, I think if you get some decent anchor text links to the site using the plural... the domain being singular will be irrelevant.

This is how I will do it. I will always look for the exact keyword phrase (usually 3-words) but if all the domains are taken (I only look for.com, .net, .org) I will research for another keyword phrase. I know this is the best so I will not even compromise a second choice with a word before or after the keyword phrase I am looking for. There are many other keyword phrases that I can find (many fishes in the ocean :-) But I do this only for micro niche sites.

An exact match domain would be beautiful, however, I think if you can get some text anchor links with the plural keyword, you will do just fine with the singular domain. Are you mirco niche targeting? I have quite a few unused micro niche domains that I am trying to unload so that I can invest in some .co domains. Lamp-Shades.org is one that I have. If you want it let me know. We can work out a good deal.

Thanks, but I totally just made up lampshades because I was looking at one! Didn't want to give away my niche.

  • Hi Jenn(y?)

If the plural gets more traffic play around with variations on the plural - joinwordtogether(s), hyphenate, try .org, etc. or increase the number of words - increase the length of the tail and do some defined keyword research to see what comes up.

I know there are those that don't like hyphens - I've never had a problem - mind you I don't operate in microniches.

I reckon if you approach the SEO as a single operation, and undertake as much as you can in the process of devloping the site, this will offset not having the exact keyword as your domain name.

    Hope this helps
