A HUGE timesaver - Speed up video playback with this FREE tool

All versions of VLC 1.0 and higher allow you to control video playback speed. Versions prior to 1.0 did have limited supported for this, but the audio would be distorted, and you would often hear 'chipmunk' sounds.

Almost all video formats are supported out-of-the-box, and you don't need to install additional codecs:
VideoLAN - VLC media player - Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player

You click on the buttons to the left and right of the seek bar to decrease and increase playback speed by 0.6x. And you also have more fine-grained control - Click 'Playback -> Faster (fine)' or 'Playback-> Slower (fine)' on the menu bar to increase or decrease the speed by 0.1x. Alternatively, use the [ and ] keyboard shortcuts.

There is another program called Enounce My Speed that allows you control the playback speed of online videos. I have that too, and use it often. But for longer videos, I prefer to download them using IDM and play them using VLC.

I often play back videos at 2x speed, and find the audio perfectly understandable, and I get through the video in half the time it would normally take, which is a very big time saver.

Regards,
Mario

I'll heartily second the recommendation for VLC for just about anything video-related! It's my default player and I hate using anything else now. So many options to control everything from the picture brightness to sound (much better controls than my laptop offers).

I also use and love VLC for watching entertainment videos. It just works no matter what format.
But, for any kind of educational studies, I use and really love Enounce Myspeed.

FYI- there is a coupon code travismoise20 that will save you 20%.

      Travis.

Yup, VLC player is my favourite player too.

Streams videos so quickly, larger files simply don't lag and the controls are everything you could need.

Hi Mario, thank you for pointing this feature out to me. I've used this app for a while now and highly recommend it for media playback, too... wow, I never thought to look for this simple feature in VLC.

I agree on using Enounce's MySpeed for online video playback. You simply select the speed you like and it sits in your Windows taskbar ready for use at any time.

I did notice one thing about MySpeed... if I'm using Realplayer (free or paid versions) to capture and download a video performance, while I am using MySpeed to adjust the playback, my Firefox browser crashes. Not sure what's up with that, but there must be something conflicting with the two scripts (or, maybe it's my own fault... dunno).

Anyway, big shout out to Alan and the Warriors! I found Mario and the answer to my question (and this VLC playback feature) from a Google search! Way to go Warrior Forum!

If you wanted to speed up video playback on the iPhone or iPad, even directly from websites like YouTube, you should try Swift Player app.
