Yahoo Answers: How He Used It

I found a question on Yahoo Answers about Info Product Killer and answered it (using my review site as the source for traffic, etc - but I gave a good response, too!).

I went back to see who was chosen and realized the asker had two accounts (most likely) and chose his own other account answer that didn't answer in the thread but just put a link and drove traffic to his own domain. LOL

Savvy marketing, I guess! I didn't think of that

See the thread here:

What is the Info Product Killer? - Yahoo! Answers

Is this common?
Would it be considered spammy to do this?
Sound off...

I would call it spam. Or black hat. Or whatever you may call it. Maybe it is ok if you ask a question that many would be interested in and then provide really high quality answer, but he is just giving a link. This is not what I would like to do.

I can see how this might bother some. But Yahoo does allow multiple user accounts.

If there is no clear term against doing this at Answers it's not "wrong".

At the same time I imagine if this becomes a trend Yahoo will come down on it.

    Hi Tiffany,

I wrote about this in another thread. I do it all the time, though some might see it as "grey hat" or spammy.

I ask a question with the long tail in the subject and in the body.

I then log into a different account and answer my own question with a link to my page where I want the traffic.

I then log back into the account that asked the question and rate my own answer as the best :-)

It works, though I'm sure if Yahoo catches you, you will be banned from Answers. Just use a proxy to do it

Tiffany, Is it considered spammy? I guess that all boils down to what you consider spam

But, if you look around that place you will see a lot of people using the method you described successfully.

I guess the only question is, how many different color hats to do you own?

Yep you are right! I noticed this habit already, in yahoo answers.. and There is an automated software, that makes it easy to use many accounts, and automate the question/answer process.. I do not use it though. And my answers still get a high level rates as the Best Answers

Once something like this hits a big forum like this it will not work very long, because so many people start doing it the site owner finds a way to stop it.

Yeah, that trick has been around a long time and it's just a matter of time before Yahoo puts a ban on IP's using there system like that.
Then, you have to use a proxy which are too funky at times.

If you're going to do that approach, you're better off teaming up with a few people and "helping" each other out

This cannot be stopped if the person does it intelligently. If IP's constantly change and no patterns emerge, Yahoo cannot detect it.

Now, if you only have 2 accounts, and they keep replying to each other....good luck.

For those of you that are curious. The first software that did this was AnswerSniper. It was replicated by AnswerEye.

I wouldn't consider it spam because someone asked about the product and he just sent them to his review site. If no one asked about the product and he was just posting it randomly all over the place then I would consider it spam.

When you are not IM-ing, by any chance, do you also lead the English cricket team and go by the name Kevin Petersen ?

You were asleep again, weren't you??

The "someone" that asked the question and the "someone" that answered the question are the same person!

Another way to do it. It's untraceable :-)

You have 10 questions you want to ask

Go to eLance and pay 10 different people $2 each to post the question

Pay 10 other people $2 each to post the answers to those questions

The askers must now rate the answers from your guys as the best.

Heck, 90% of all other marketing material is fake, total BS, or outright lies and I see this as no different.

    Same old same old.

People only use these type of strategies because they SUCK at actually selling and being transparent. They have to result in duping people with lies, BS, and other attempts of trickery.

This along with all the other lame tactics don't surprise me. It's pretty much par for the course for sub par marketers.

That's another way to look at at. I make use of this strategy. Does that mean I SUCK at actually selling? Well, if I look at my figures for the past 30 days, nope, I sell pretty darn good :-)

Mabey not transparent, that doesn't bother me much. If you'll lose sleep over it, don't do it.

This method has been around for a while and is nothing new. Their will always be ways to make this method work, but making it profitable is the tricky part.

The fact that people use yahoo answers to get traffic as a method does not mean they suck at selling. If people are lying- then thats different.

How is doing that any different then what the guru's teach about going to forums, and using a different name to promote your product? Its not.

And I wouldn't call most "gurus" sub par marketers as some of them make a lot of money and are good people...

Hmmm...interesting. I only visit yahoo answers about once a month and search and answer questions. My answers get chosen as best about 50% of the time but I bet if I were to ask and answer my own questions I could get that % up to about 80 or 90% depending on my mood at the time....

    Hi

I suppose another way round it, rather than pay elance, is to JV with someone. You give best answer for their replies and they give best answer for your replies.

Now why didn't I think of that before? !

I was trying to find a way round it without the risk of getting banned as I use Yahoo Answers a lot.

    Best wishes

    Mary
