traffic reporting tools

Hi - some quick "competitive research" questions.

[1] - Are there any tools that let you reliably see
how much traffic a site is getting from people
along with how long they stay at that site and
where they come from?

[2] Does any such tool exist that lets you compare
multiple sites at a time?

[3] - Is there any kind of reporting tool that lets
you take the data you get from question #2 and
export it to a spreadsheet for analysis?

    There is one tool that does all that ... and a lot more ... Long Tail Magic (Long Tail Magic | Raakesh.com)

    But it hasn't been launched yet ... Official launch date Nov 19 2008 ...

      I apologize for my post ...

      I think I misunderstood what you were asking. Long Tail Magic is a tool that lets you view all the stats of the site's that you control. It tracks and lets you compare stats of all your sites in one control panel but not 3rd party sites.

    There is no tool out there that can monitor other peoples business like you laid out

    this info is only available to sites you have control over

    I created my own tracking tool to see the details I needed but without having the ability to add code to someones page, I highly doubt a tool out there can give those details

    now there referral logs that are public on the web every so often I stumble upon and its interesting to see those stats but they are generalizations of what is really happening

      Yeah,

      I had a feeling it was going to be something like that.

      So when there is a suggestion in an ebook or video
      that you do some research on how much traffic
      someone is *really* getting, there's no easy way
      to do get real data. Would that be a correct inference?

      And if the new tool mentioned above will claim to do this
      I hope that there will an indication of method. Even if
      it is a trade secret, there ought to be something that
      indicates a logic of sorts.

      And lastly - how does adding my site to directories
      help for this purpose? I'm confused on this point.

        My experience that is pretty much so

        but you can do a little detective work, like looking at

        compete.com
        quantcast.com

        to see what they have for rough figueres traffic data

        just recently I was on clickbank looking at an affiliate product

        so I decided to look at compete.com to see how much traffic is going to the site, and discoverd they have an estimate of 42,000 plus visits monthly so the product appears to be a mature product and appears to be something people are looking for

        so even thou you can't get exact figures you can do some detective work



        And if the new tool mentioned above will claim to do this

        I am talking about tracking software that you install code on your pages and you monitor who comes and goes from your pages, including keywords and how they found you

        with data like this you can understand your business and make decisions based on what and how people find you

        I think the person who wrote this was just making a suggestion on how to get traffic nothing about knowing what others are getting for traffic

          good procedure out of the effort.

    I guess the best way is to simply put the sites into Compete, Alexa the Web Information Company and http://www.seodigger.com compare the results with your own site to estimate how much traffic they get and where it comes from

      See - this is part of what I don't understand. I took
      a quick look at both Compete and Alexa. Alexa shows
      what other sites people are interested in, but not
      the sites from which they come, and Compete doesn't
      give that information at all in the public viewing area.
      Does it provide that when you use it as a paying member?

        I was asking about competitive research,
        not about tracking traffic at my own site.

        Alexa, Compete and Quantcast look like
        they might be at least partial solutions
        to what I'm after. Time to go play.
