It's been ten years since a new toll-free number area code has been made available in the United States... and it's happening on October 2nd when the 855 toll-free code goes into effect.

Right now, you can attempt to grab a valuable 855 vanity number and it won't cost you a dime. In fact, you'll have 30 days before you have to pay for it... and maybe by then you can find a company who wants to buy it from you (hint, hint).

Just enter in a keyword (7 characters is best, of course) and you'll be given a list of possibilities. You can reserve whichever ones you want.

The system is first-come, first-serve, so just because you put in a reservation doesn't necessarily mean you'll get it (they'll let you know on October 2). But if you do, you'll get to use the number for 30 days (30 minutes of time included). After that, you'll have to pay a $30 one-time activation fee and $15 per month (100 minutes/month included, $0.07/minute after that).

If your reservation doesn't take, or if you cancel before the first 30 days, you won't be charged anything.

  • Sounds like a good idea. I'm guessing the big guys are automating a lot of this, trying to get as many valuable name/numbers as possible.

    • On the surface, it sounds like a good idea.........and yet......when was the last time you attempted to dial (okay, punch in) a number using the letter keys rather than just punching in the numbers?

      I realize having a cute, memorable name is neat, but not so neat when you're dialing it. I'd rather have a number that's easy to remember. But that's just me. I'm just an old codger, who actually remembers using a rotary dial phone. And numbers that were combinations of letters and numbers - like Pennsylvania 6 - 5000. (I remember black and white TV and rabbit ears antennas, too )
