This may sound kind of strange, but ever since I was a kid, I've always wanted to be an cartoonist. I used to always draw and doodle. I even took an art class and had a comic strip in the high school newspaper.

Unfortunately, my life never took that career path and I never learned the cartooning trade or worked on my drawing skills since.

So I'm now middle aged, married with two kids, and looking to get back into it again. At least as a hobby for now. But here's my idea of possibly making some money along the way.

I want to create a blog that's a sort of diary of my progress. Every day or every week I'll post what I did, what I learned, what I practiced, and what products I bought to help me. I'll also add a discussion forum to hopefully create a nice community of other people just like me. People of all ages who want to learn how to draw cartoons and want to follow me while I do it too.

Now here's where the money is.

Within that blog I want to put Adsense ads and some affiliate links. I'll also post a bunch of Youtube videos and hopefully become a Youtube partner and make money that way too. And who knows. Maybe I could create a product along the way.

So there's the idea and now I'd like some suggestions for a good name for the blog / URL.

Any thoughts?

Mike

I use bustaname dot com it's pretty brilliant. Not laid out well, but you get 2 amazing ways to find great keywords.

    1) enter multiple words and it will mix and match combinations and ONLY give you whats available to buy. You can do 2 word, 3 word, choose only .com and all sorts of cool things.

    2) You can just type the .com name in 1 letter at time and dynamically it will tell you if its available. So you can do.. cartooni cartooning cartoonally cartooned or any sort of letters.

Keep us posted... always cool to see a great story unfold.

Truthfully, I don't know how many would be interested in reading about YOUR daily progress, BUT, there are a lot of people who would like to learn how to draw.

There's good money in the learn "how to draw" niche. In fact, that is the featured niche in Chris Farrell's affiliatedotcom course.
Check Clickbank and you'll find a bunch of affiliate related products.

    "cartoonlife.net" (com is gone)

      Realstrategic,

Thanks for the site suggestion. I'll check it out.

      Vincenzo,

I respectfully disagree with you're thinking that people wouldn't be interested in following other people's progress. Especially if it's in a niche that others are interested in.

Look at reality shows like Kate + 8, and Little People. They are huge sucesseses and all you're basically doing is watching their lives go by. Not that I'm a fan of those types of shows, but if there was one that threw in some nuggets that would actually help me obtain my goals or dreams, I'd be all over it.

In fact, I think it would be awesome to have an IM newbie start a blog like this so I and others could watch what he/she does to "learn" the business of IM. Watch what mistakes they make and see how they overcome them. And I'm sure there would be a motivational aspect to the blog as well. If they never give up, then the blog visitors may never give up either.

      Mike.

P.S. If a newbie does this, please let me know so I can become a fan.

You're so right there. People seem to have an insatiable appetite for this kind of thing. How about

That's a wonderful idea, Mike. Indeed your niche has great potential on the market. Also the fact that you have such passion for drawing cartoons will eventually make your venture a big success. As I already have said on other threads: Your fortune lies where your heart is!
I suggest you use your blog to offer your services as a freelance cartoon artist. I've seen on Elance and Odesk jobs posted for freelance cartoon artists. Just add a page on your blog (a kind of online C.V.) explaining the kind of freelance services you offer and explain your professional background etc.

    Best of Luck

You've got a point there Mike. I didn't mean to discourage you. I'm thinking with a marketing mindset where "me' and "I" are dirty words in favor of "you".

If you can create an interesting story you can build fans. You'll need a compelling persona and a good story line.

I might suggest getting on Facebook, add friends with similar interests (go through relevant "groups") and maybe start your own group once you have about 500 friends.
Then build a facebook fanpage and connect it to twitter and add both to your blog.
    (viral tips)

    Good luck!

Here's are my suggestions for possible blog names:
    cartoons4u.net (.com is taken)
    love4cartoons.com

if you add your own name to your blog and/or company you're kind of making yourself a trademark:
    mikes-cartoons.com
    cartoons2mike.com
    cartoons4mike.com

Excellent ideas to build a fan page and build a community on FB.

Domain names that come to my mind are:

    Toonsville
    MikeToons

Try some variations with your interest and your name so that you can brand your creations later on.

This is awesome. I also love the FB Fan page (and now the new Groups) idea. Thanks Vincenzo.

Also, thanks to those who's been suggesting names. I think adding my name will not only help me find available urls, but will also help me build a brand if that's where all this leads.

      Please keep em comin...

it sounds like you are on the right path with your blog. at the same time doing something you enjoy. i disagreement with the comment also that no one would wanna read it. it is a popular niche. my suggestion is you surround the name with your keyword i.e. google keyword tool and at the same time i aslo like it to sound good and roll off the tongue...something catchy. also i agree with your placing ppc on your blog surrounding your niche. it sounds to me friend you just need to brainstorm a little more and it will come. i dont think you need any help. have faith,,, you got a nice battle plan

i hope it does well for you , best wishes friend

What wonderful synchronicity ;-) I've just been reviewing a Facebook member's profile page, who's a fellow cartoonist with no less than 7 cartoon websites!! Here's a link to this profile page:
    http://www.facebook.com/danscartoons
You can take a look and get some ideas for constructing your own Fan Page. I suggest you take a look at the domain names of this cartoonist as well.
    Hope this helps

The NOKIA people used an animated "dot" to promote the tiny lens or something like that. The second one details how they came up with the marketing idea.

Most people don't really get "the making" of cartoons or animation with a camera lens and stuff like that but this were interesting - even to me this time! http://www.ez-1.net/thedot

Mike - there's just nothing better than focusing on something that you are passionate about. So many of us end up spending a lot of our time on subjects/products that we couldn't care less about but that have a high search volume. This could turn out really well for you.

The domain that popped into my head - and is available - drawlikemike.com

Good luck to you and let us know how it turns out!
