Outsourcing to the Philippines?

Hi All,

I am considering outsourcing some of my work and I know a lot recommend the Philippines.

Do any of you have any advice about this? Where to hire them, and how to go about this?

Thanks a lot. Also, what kind of salary is appropriate for someone in the Philippines doing full time work (ex what would be appropriate for a programmer vs someone just writing articles)?

Thanks! I appreciate any advice you can give.

I would head over to digital point forums to the buy/sell section of the website; try some of the people out; check their itrader rating; dont pay until the work is done and it's good...

When I paid unfront, they seem to never do anything work!

Go to Freelancer.com | Online Jobs | Freelance Employment | Outsourcing Services | Programmers | Web Design | Freelancers and find people in the Philippines to outsource to.

I have a virtual assistant from the Philippines and it works out great.

The biggest tip i can give you is to sharpen up your management skills. When outsourcing project and people management on your behalf is main contributor to the success of outsourcing.

Make sure you are clear and definite with what needs to be done and communicate/convey it in a way that cannot be misunderstood. Keep the relationshop professional and you should be ok.

        Hope this helps.

Yes. I have several full-time workers from the Philippines
that I use for 40 hours per week (160 hours per month) for
between $250 and $400 per month depending upon what
      I have them doing.

Pay peanuts you get monkeys, I employ 5 computer operators, 24/7 and my wage bill is a lot higher, but I now have a well trained and stable work force.

It was not until the wages increased I found the stability I needed

250 TO 400 a month is VERY good salary in the phils, I would say you should be paying no more than 10k pesos per month

400 per month? thats double a nurses salary, to give you an idea the minimum wage in Manila is approx 6 dollars per day, so a store clerk? 120 dollars per month.

most workers in Manila would be thrilled to get 200 dollars a month salary. Thats a good wage

I live in Manila btw. If you want to pay double the salary you should be paying, then hey its your money

I think we are talking about Virtual Assistants, Web Developers, and SEO Experts from the Philippines here. 200 USD/month is no longer a fair wage in my own point of view.

I doubt also if you are willing to hire newbie VA's from the Philippines because if you do, then 200 USD is truly agreeable.

          Just my 2 cents....

Head over to odesk.com. You can see a person's feedback and know about the service provided by that individual

And yes ignore the pms you are going to receive from now on asking for jobs. lol

Yes, you can get that price but since they ask very low price don't expect them to work for you 8 hours a day 6 days a week unless you watch them 8 hours a day.

Most of those who charge very low have more than 2 customers and divide their time for their customers they don't work dedicated for single customers.

But of course there are exemption there are some who are honest and work for you 8 hours a day 6 days a week with no extra customer during their working hour for you.

Yes you can and I always start people at about that rate unless they are exceptionally skilled writers. For a good programmer you will pay more. But for a VA that you are training and teaching, 300 is about right.

John Jonas has great training and I use his system.

I took John Jonas' course, and then took the plunge and
hired direct... reading resumes available through John's
site (of Filipinos specifically looking to work for westeners).

I've had excellent results! Others who've hired direct have
shared that they have not had such great results. I guess
having lived in the Philippines, speaking the language, and
understanding the culture gives me some advantages.

Let me know if you have any questions though, either here,
    or via PM.

There are two ways you can hire in the Philippines:

    1. Directly individual hiring
    Pros:
    • It costs cheaper
    • No long term contracts
    • No setup fees
    • You are not required by law to give incentives / extra pay

    Cons:
    • Hard to find a "gem" staff
    • It's time consuming to do the screening yourself
    • Your staff can accept other jobs which can compromise their time and dedication to you.
    • They work from home (lots of distractions)
    • Daily reports can be unreliable since there is no physical supervisor to verify it and watch over their shoulders
    2. Hiring from an agency
    Pros:
    • You get dedicated staff with a supervisor making sure they get the job done.
    • They work in a real office environment
    • You get replacement if ever the staff is incompetent
    • Your staff is pre-screened, trained and is usually a college graduate with a degree

    Cons:
    • A bit pricey than direct individual hiring because agencies have to pay office space, management staff, etc.
    • Some have long term contracts
    • Some have setup fees
    • Some require you to follow employment laws in the Philippines (like paying 13th month pay)
Price for direct individual hiring can range from $1-$3/hour.
Price for agency hiring can range from $4+/hour

So it all comes to your budget. If you have limited budget but want to start outsourcing then direct individual hiring is your best choice. Be ready to face some "challenges" along the way though. If you have a budget then obviously, going to agencies is the best choice. It's like having a physical office with real staff without the physical management headaches.

If you want to go with direct individual hiring try Odesk or Bestjobs. If you want to go to agencies, PM me and I might be able to help you.

I have outsourced through oDesk with great results.

For me, to get good results I've found that it is vital that I am absolutely clear about what I want and need. I also think it is very important to treat my team members with respect. I have worked with a few of the same people for over a year now. In that time I have come to know a little about them personally and I think that has helped to build a feeling of a team and a sense of loyalty. I am happy to give bonuses when a job is well done and I give bonuses during the holidays.

I have paid for some work by the hour (according to what is requested by the candidate) and other work has been paid for based on an agreed amount upon completion of a project.

I have also had to let people go. I don't have a problem with this if the work is not being completed. There will always be some people that have stronger work ethics than others - that has to be expected. But I also learned very quickly that if I did not give detailed information about what I wanted, I would not get the desired results. In other words, outsourcing puts you in a managerial position of sorts and you have to be prepared to handle that.

Thanks so much to everyone in this thread and others referenced for some really quality information about outsourcing. Allow me to share my current situation and experience.

I'm working with someone on a project, and I'm taking care of all the online stuff. He's got a PR agent, and doing a lot of offline stuff. radio interviews and other things to grow the company.

To be frank, I'm a web designer, not an Internet Marketer. Towards that end, we've decided that we need to outsource this. As he (the one I work with) has indirect contacts with some well-known successful people on the internet, he's aware that they outsource everything.

So I need to outsource SEO, and need someone who can take the site I've built and simply drive traffic to it, and build our list. I'm relying on their knowledge and experience, but I've already gone through a number of article writers, and working to figure out what the current seo person is really doing? I feeling frustrated, and at the same time working to learn Internet Marketing as fast as I can as well.

Reading Sven's post on outsourcing appears pretty accurate. they're obviously not working 8 hours a day, Positive they have other clients, and who knows what else.

I am currently outsourcing to the Philippines. One reason is because it is cheap, yes, but also because I like filippino's. My wife is a fillipina.

So I guess the question is... Is it possible to really find someone who's actually good at what they do, and someone who I can trust, and begin to see some results?

The previous SEO person we had was driving up to 100 hits a day to our site, but no one was signing up to our list, or buying. Who knows what the heck she was doing. but it wasn't working.

If you have any feedback or even if you're from the Philippines and are truly great at SEO/IM I'd love to hear from you.

If those sites don't get money how are they suppose to benefit from such service? I mean we internet marketers do the same, don't we?

Btw i really recommend Philippinese, they do high quality work and plus they are really cheap.

I had 3 Filipinos working for me until last month. 1 was very good, one was average and 1 not so good. 2 FT and 1 PT. I paid them $250 to $300 a month for FT, mainly doing 2 tasks...building auto blogs and reworking public domain books for Amazon Kindle.
As others have noted, pay them by the blog built, by the book edited, etc. Paying them by the hour was a disaster for me. Paying them on production worked great!
I was working a specific project that I ended, but if I needed to outsource, that is where I would go for hiring my employees.
And like Willie, I too took Jonas' course to see how he did it. Felt like it was worth the $99 spent.

Note the comments. I suggest that you begin them with lower rate then when you find the gems, pay them what it says on that chart. Don't start them off high since you aren't sure if they are worth it in the beginning.

      Nice!! Thank you very much.

I just hired a U.S. based outsourcing company to get some things going but i am keen to have a crack at going direct.

I've done specific project outsourcing but never ongoing work.

So far the specific projects have been very hit and miss. I just lost 2k this week when a job that had been going on for nearly 8 months came to a head.......the end result was I wont be seeing that money unless i manage to kidnap sachin tendulkar and hold him for ransom!

Going to have to be tough on this next project though coz i have absolutely had a gutful of dodgy people trying to and ripping me off.

It certainly isn't anything against anyone from any particular country, this week (having an absolute shocker) I got ripped off by an American Warrior who was a member here since 2009!

He isn't any more, and unlike the guy in India, this person i can and will get!

If anyone thinks they are good enough and honest enough to work for me knowing i'm one rip off away from jumping on a plane and sorting it out personally, I'd love to hear from you

I've got 1 full time worker in the Philippines - I've found that for transcription (the original reason I hired her) she does great work, and for other tasks her level is directly related to how well I can express what it is I want her to do.

I had several people working for me from the Philippines. They where very good. I just need them for about six month project and it worked out great. I was paying one $400 per month and the other $300 per month.

One was a web programer and one was an article writer.

A friend of mine recently launched an educational website which teaches small business owners how to market their business on the internet.

One of the courses is an hour long video course on how to hire employees from the Philippines.

      You might find it useful.

      Good luck.

Thanks a lot. Also, what kind of salary is appropriate for someone in the Philippines doing full time work (ex what would be appropriate for a programmer vs someone just writing articles)?

Thanks! I appreciate any advice you can give.
My only advice is that if you are outsourcing any content writing I would stick to United States born unless you don't want quality with good grammar and spelling. Just my experience and my two cents.

I partly agree and disagree to this.

Well, since English is the first language of the United States American people, it is hands down that when it comes to quality writing, one can really expect to the fullest.

On the other hand, I have quite a few Filipino friends who can also give quality writing and they have won a certain contest abroad.

They just loved writing and reading so much.

I think for those type of workers you need to use odesk and only odesk. Reason being you can check their tests, feedback and check how many hours they worked. You can get good work done in the Philippines for cheap, there is allot of competition among themselves.

Many outsource in the Philippines for the reason that Filipinos are very hardworking and they always make sure that they pass quality work. For article writers, you can pay $300 per month and that's full time. You can look for Filipino freelancers at oDesk.

If you are looking for workers in the Philippines, you might want to check Odesk.com, Onlinejob.ph, and Freelancer.com. These sites present a list of qualified workers who can deliver the task that you requires them to do. The important thing is that you have to look for that "gem" worker that will understand and deliver the tasks similar to what is your standard.
As for the payment or the rate of payment, I would say it depends on the quality and quantity of the article or services that they will deliver to you. And before hiring some people to work for you, might as well give them a test run and then you could screen those who you want to work with.
You will probably find the persons that you are looking for in the Philippines, since they are known to deliver the task to their client satisfactorily.

Don't know about the Philippines but my husband in his previous job (Online Marketing Manager for a big IM business) used to manage some guys from Pakistan and it was a disaster. His company had hired them for peanuts to do SEO - mainly article writing and link-building, but also some occasional content writing for the actual website. They had hired them through a local agency.

The biggest problem (and I don't mean to offend anyone) seems to be the language. In my husband's case, the articles these guys would write would make no sense and added no value whatsoever to whoever read them. They repeated the keywords in every other sentence and that was it. They were also very poorly written. Same with the website content and my husband would then have to spend additional time re-writing it in proper English. A big wast of time and resources for his employer!

If your website/project is targeting English-speaking countries (and presumably it does) then you want the language in it to be nothing less than perfect, or your visitors will instantly know a non-native speaker wrote the content and guess what - they won't think your website/project is any serious and they will leave.
If you are serious about your website/project, you may want to consider this.
I'm not saying that all non-native speakers speak bad English, but it seems to be a very common problem with workers from underdeveloped countries.

Another reoccuring problem my husband had was the very poor infrastructure in Pakistan where their workers were based. They constantly had to deal with power outages, interrupted or weak Internet connection etc. Often times he would be talking to them on MSN about work-related tasks and the connection would suddenly "die" and he wouldn't be able to get back in touch with them for hours (usually due to a power outage or a bad Internet connection on their end). It could very well be the same in the Philippines, especially if your workers were based in some province.
If you have to deal with problems like that on a weekly basis and spend hours trying to fix stupid issues that keep you away from your business, I don't know how much it's worth outsourcing to cheap laborers from overseas. Yes, it will save you a lot of money but it will give you many headaches in return!

If you want cheap solutions, I'd look into having local interns, or one or two hourly-paid local people who would work for you part-time and who would be doing this for an additional income (e.g. a stay-at-home mom, a retired person who'd be looking for a few hours of work, a student looking for some pocket-money and some work experience etc).

I employ 5 filipinos as computer operators. It runs 24/7. Until i started paying considerably more than the oft quoted $300, i could not keep staff. I hired by face to face interviews. Everyone gets the same rate and the incentive scheme is also shared equally. I imported a Chinese supervisor, in whom I have complete trust, who is also a programmer and general computer whiz, increased the wages and now i have a stable, well trained workforce. It took time to find the right employees, and low wages proved to be a big part of the problem. There are also the little things like transport at night, which i solved, quite easily, for a few well invested dollars a day and enforcing punctuality. I am so confident I am planning on spending three months sailing around the Pacific, going weeks internet free. Good workers are out there, finding them is hard. they say pay peanuts, you get monkeys

The more expertise a VA has the more salary they should command, the "you get what you pay for rule" applies anywhere in the world.

Even paying a highly talented VA from the Philippines is still going to be a huge saving for you compared with hiring locally.

If you're looking for people on the low side of the expected pay rate then be prepared to do some serious training to get them up to the standard you're looking for.

But watch out because they could leave for higher pay with their new and improved skill levels. It's just human nature.

When you find good people, look after them.

If $200 is too low for a quality person, I can be happy to pay more, providing of course that I"m getting the experience and the results. The problem is that it's hard to find a really good person that's worthy of paying more.

They may say they have 3 - 5 years experience, but producing the results is another thing. Are they staying on top of the current trends, can they look at your site/niche/industry etc. and come up with a strategic plan to build quality targeted traffic? or do they simply have years of experience in simply building links?

This seems to be the difference, do you want someone to simply build links, or someone who's a true internet marketer? I'm looking for a true IM.

I've been outsourcing to the Philippines for a couple of years now. I have one really good worker right now, and another that is not so good. I have found that just because the worker is great at building websites, they might not be so great at doing other tasks, and it is important to keep the work specific to that employee, keeping the work in their area of specialization. If you need a social media guy, don't automatically expect your VA to know how to do social media or even want to do the work, etc.

I read a lot about outsourcing before I jumped in, and one thing I read said "Be quick to hire and quicker to fire", which really goes against how i would handle an employee at any of the retail locations I have had previously here in the US. If I had an employee that was struggling or made a few mistakes, I was always inclined to work with the employee to train and resolve any issues. But not so with the workers from the Philippines.

Reasons being there is a language barrier, a communications barrier, a time zone issue, and a face to face/hands on meeting will never happen. Although Skype helps, face to face is always better. And there are so many people that are looking and needing to work, if you select a bad one, it is always easier to pick another employee rather than trying to correct behavior or correct errors or fix issues about their work. And I know that sounds cold and heartless (and this is coming from a soft and compassionate guy - Really!) but based on the comments of others and based on my experience, it is simply true.

I have found the workers from the Philippines to be hard working, honest, not entrepreneurial minded - they just want to be a good employee. And i have had a not so good experience when I tried outsourcing from other countries. I am happy with the guys I have, I consider them to be my employees, they save me time and money, and they do a great job.

Honestly, there is a significant difference in quality between an outsourced writer from the Philippines and a native speaking English writer.

While there is more upfront cost with native speaking English writers, I have found that their writing provides the best long term results, and greater overall revenue.

Mate native english writers are born to be english speaking and it's their main language. While filipinos are just using english as their secondary language so it's not a big deal if there's some quality barriers.

I'm from Philippines myself and I outsourced all my work to my fellow filipinos because of it's attitude and work ethics. You can find numerous reliable filipino freelancers, just choose wisely.

I used to work for a video game company and we outsourced some of our support staff to the Philippines. I would definitely recommend it if you have the resources available.

    1. They are fairly cheap depending on the skill of work required.
    2. Professional mentality, most Filipinos go to college straight out of high school so they are educated and professional in the work place.
    3. Very friendly and polite demeanor.

Overall I was very pleased with the level of support when we outsourced to the Philippines and still remain personal friends with some of my ex-coworkers to this day. If you are looking for large scale outsourcing in the Philippines look up the term "BPO" (Business Process Outsourcing).

We Filipinos tend to be loyal to our bosses/managers if we are treated and managed well. In addition, we are very good workers and can easily be trained. Many educated individuals can easily adapt to western culture because we're inclined to that. English communication is not a big problem. Majority of us strive to work hard because finding a job in our country is not that easy. Most local companies only hire college level or degree holders.
