list promotion question/list response

Hi,

Question for people who have successful lists/marketed to 'cold' leads (or semi-warm, meaning they signed up for an opt-in form, etc).

How do you make your list more responsive, and what do you consider a good % rate for sales (when you promote to them)?

I have this one list I've been working on specifically through aweber, size about 1,750. (Not sure if that is 'large', because I have several much larger, so I'd actually consider this a small list right now... but anyways...)

Anyways. I've set up the autoresponder sequence, have good content (useful content), and then periodically send out a promotion.

With the autoresponder sequence, it's gone from an initial 20% open rate to only 10% open rate (so I am assuming maybe perhaps I need to tweak the content for the audience). And then, periodically when I do list promotions, I seem (at the moment) to only get between 0-2 sales, which would be roughly 1% of people who actually do open it (or, for the actual list size, really only 0.01%). (Recently sent out a promo, so results may be a bit premature yet, but haven't yet seen anything out of a roughly 30% clickthrough rate for actual opens). I am promoting good/quality useful stuff of course (don't do junk), but I would expect a much higher purchase/clickthrough rate because the products actually are quality.

If you have a successful list, what do you do to make it successful, and as a benchmark, what would you consider a good 'open->click->actual sales' rate? (PS, again this is for a 'cold' to slighly 'warm' leads as this is from single optin for a free report/free service, etc, etc, as opposed to (yet) being an actual buyers list.)

I should also mention that this is for the traffic building/'money making' arena (as opposed to specific niche websites, etc).

Thanks!

J

Nothing I'm about to say is probably anything you want to hear but...

As for the open rates and numbers you want to hear, they're all across the board for me. It all depends on the subject line.

There are different email marketing models you can follow and each model has an upside and downside.

To make the type of model you're almost using work, typically you have to crank out a lot of your own products and have some coaching program in place or some type of big ticket offer on the backend.

You have to be focused on selling more of your own products to the same customers.

Maybe that's your problem. You're trying to have a hybrid of 2 different models and they clash with eachother?

A way to have people open your eMails more often is to link your information to your password protected blog and to change the password every 3 days.

I think it is hard to generalize about opening/conversion rates. Every niche will be different, each different type of marketing program will be different, and even the individual emails can be different.

Ultimately, to increase your open and conversion rates, you'll want to get people used to seeing information from you. Personally, my lists send an email every single day. A large majority of them never attempt at any sort of sale. When possible, I even try to get the user to do something. Get them used to clicking on links within your emails. These links could go to articles on your site, polls or even other interesting pages you find on the internet. Once you can get into these habits, you should find that more people will open your emails and even click on links in your emails. Browse through your autoresponder messages and note how many of your emails have links in them. Do any of them have links that are not trying to sell something? I think people can get used to ignoring the links in emails when they realize it will always be a sales page. On the other hand, if you get them used to clicking non-sales links then they should be much more likely to click on sale link without even thinking twice about it.

    every niche is different.

If your open rate is 10 percent or less - you are probably not ENGAGING your audience enough.

If you ENGAGE and start conversation with them - more will open.

To get a cold list to open - you have to have a subject line that excites/angers/motivates or something... but you better be careful how you do it or you could get a lot of unsubs.

Also - Aweber does NOT track every open - so your open rates COULD be higher than what is shown.

The key element in all of this is the relationship you have with your readers. If all you have is a list whereby folks have signed up either by accident or they were "casual surfers" then your open rates and click throughs are going to be low.

If you establish some sort of personal rapport with your readers / members then the open rate can rise drammatically.
