Expert Opinions Need on Monetization

Okay guys. Some people say monetize your site straight away, others say wait until you've been indexed.

What do you think?

I would say you should MONETIZE your site right away and then OPTIMIZE your site after you are seeing some traffic.

BIG difference between the two ideas.

If you are just starting out a site, put up some adsense or an affiliate product in the sidebar or whatever else you are using to monetize your site.

After you start seeing some traffic then you can optimize your ads. Draw attention to them and MAKE people click or buy. (Easy to say, harder to do )

Thanks Mr Twig. I already have sites and I have done it both ways. I just came up with a new business model and wanted to start out *right* with my new sites.

I hope I can generate lots of opinions - hopefully all the same!

Sorry dude, but here's a different one.

I believe G looks at if and how many AdSense units there are on your pages. Too many (whatever "too many" means for them) and your ranking can take a hit. One of many factors, but still.

So I usually start out clean and then ease in some ad blocks once I show up in the SERPs. I'm not 100% sure if it really makes a difference, but I figure as long as I'm NOT indexed yet, I'm not losing any revenue anyway, so may as well leave it out.

That's mostly for Adsense though, dunno how G looks at or if they even notice other ads.

You can start monetizing your site from the very beginning. But if this is a community based site then wait until your community grows to a sizable amount.

That's what I was always told Mr Krieger. I never thought about the "I'm NOT indexed yet, I'm not losing any revenue anyway" aspect.

    Thanks for your input

I have always monetized my sites right at the very beginning and I have still been able to index and rank several of them quite well. Is it taking longer? I don't know but I'd rather not miss out on the initial income. Very few of my sites have Adsense so I can't say for certain about that, but I've monetized sites just about every other way it seems like and I haven't had issues.

That's something that really depends on what type of website you're launching. For instance, if you're going the social route you have to avoid monetization till you absolutely have to do it. Because those communities hate advertising, but are willing to support the owner if they're adding value to their community. You're doing a favor for them, and you wouldn't charge your friends five-bucks if they asked for a favor, would you? It's a communal courtesy thing.

My rule of thumb is, if you're marketing a website to get traffic you should monetize it right away, but if you're growing a community passively avoid for as long as you can.
