Gmail banning Facebook?

What is Google afraid of and banning them from Gmail? My writer sent me an article on this situation and when I read it I just went WHAT. G never ceases to amaze me with the things they do. Often I see no logic for it, but I know there is a reason or G wouldn't be doing it. They are real smart when it comes to the web.

I think I see their reasons for this one, but it just shows they are scared and want to use their size as a tool to compete. But what about their customers who use Gmail and want to access Facebook with it. Oh well, I guess the customers don't count.

G wants to control everything, if they can't they change the rules. Like in this case, but I don't understand why G would limit facebook though...

as far as me and gmail and facebook, about 5 months ago i changed my email address and removed the old one i signed up with facebook to. since then they have been telling me "facebook requires all members to have an active email address" which really pisses me off. but i still like to see what friends are doing. i just hated all the emails and now that i don't get them its very refreshing. as soon as facebook insists on my email being there, i'll be gone.

Hmm interesting read. Not the end of the world but there are two thoughts that come to my mind. First maybe google is finally getting ready to lauch their platform. Many do not know this but Google is going to team up with Zynga for Google Games as part of their social platform. They have over 500 million in funds invested into it already. The second thing that comes to mind is that maybe it has to do with the sensitivity of the info Facebook is allow to access. Maybe they are still selling off your data to 3rd party advertisers. You know there are 3 active lawsuits against Facebook currently for this charge. In the end who knows but I think it will be great once Google does launch all its Social network.

While I have Gmail accounts, I don't use them. And I have never got the hang of Facebook either. So I could really care less. But I do hate the way Google seems to be taking over the world. They are worse than the government.

A lot of people seem interested in this as I have got more than 300 visitors to this article today. Not server crashing, but not too bad either.

I love google, they keep everybody in check. You know that if you slip up even once, google is gonna steal your customers. That being said i can understand why they would want to limit facebook. I mean lets be real for a second you dont see Microsoft and Macintosh holding hands and working together for a greater cause.... NO... you see smear campaigns and all that good stuff. Facebook is now a threat, and if google is indeed about to step into the realm of social networking as well then of course they are going to want to eliminate their competition.

And google ALWAYS eliminates their competition. Dont believe me? what happened to that other search engine that people used to always use..... yahoo was it?

Very strange. Not to mention concerning. Oh well, at least there's some healthy competition for the Big G.

Let's hope facebook doesn't retaliate. That would take this stupid insanity to a whole new level.

I don't think I like either one of them. I have no use for Facebook. I love Google as we all do because we are tied to it, for the most part. But They are like the government. They give you all these goodies and you get dependent on them, then they take them away and you are screwed as you don't know how to operate without the treats. The big G is getting to be like Big Brother. Not health for any of us, in my opinion.

Well said Frank. I am very anti google. They are simply too powerful and are able to make or break aspiring internet entrepreneurs if they feel they have "broken the rules". It is not right that they get to be judge, jury and executioner. Who gave them that right? After all it was the US military that invented the internet, not google.
Well said Timpears as well. I am very concerned about the power they have. They need to be reined in by our friends in the US and some sort of anti-trust case brought against them.

It has nothing to do with google acting like 'big brother'. Google helped grow facebook by allowing data to be exported to facebook from gmail accounts, with user permission of course. Google recently asked facebook to provide the same type of access; allow people to export their facebook contacts to google, again, with user permission. Facebook wouldn't comply, so google cut them off until they do.

Maybe next time you could do some research...

What exactly where they allowing gmail users to access within gmail that has to do with Facebook? Very unclear to me. I use gmail all the time and never noticed anything about accessing Facebook. Facebook sends email notifications if you have them set up in facebook to do that, but I don't see gmail limiting that as it's just email that Facebook sends you that you've given permission for them to do.

If there's some extra functionality Gmail gave Facebook to its Gmail users, there's absolutely nothing wrong with them taking it away. Why is it somehow Gmail acting like government if they decided to control their business how the please? There's no law that says they have to give Facebook a certain access to gmail users. No reason they have to other than that they already have, but they can take it away if they wish. This is really, truly, much ado about nothing.

And what in the world does this have to do with us making money on the internet? C'mon, people, let's focus on what this forum is really for...

edit: I see now the functionality was in allowing Facebook to have access to Gmail users contacts list to get more users for Facebook. Facebook didn't allow the same access, so end of story. Isn't it Facebook you should really be upset with for acting like Big Brother? Thanks, Bobjutsu

It looks like the foundation is actually based on simple contract agreements and licenses; that is a data level. Above that, its just classic stuff but I do know that Google and Rupert Murdoch who owns Facebook are at odds. Rupert has failed in one avenue, but I would not doubt that bulldog will give up - basically there is a huge corporate war going on; among others. Google is getting more and more to be the combatant deluxe that everyone wants to take on. Just about any other power house will be butting heads with them for awhile. It is interesting that it keeps looking as if Google will be the central figure in just about every isssue of all these global internet wars, of course Apple is heading a large push for over a year now. Really I can think of any major IT industry giant and they are at battle, though silent to the general populace.

What is funny about them trying to be silent is that they all kind of rely on each other; but they are all kind of positioning and pushing each other around in "small" ways here and there. I would suspect several stories will be popping up for a few years at least.

They do make the rules about themselves. You do understand that they aren't controlling the internet, google controls google. You are basically saying "who gave google the right to decide how they run their own business".

Get it through your head, you have no right to be on google. It is their business and you are trying to use it, so you have to use it by their rules. They are under no obligation to help you. Plus, there are plenty of ways to run a business, any kind of business without google. Google is just one of many places to find customers. Do your job, learn how to use the internet as a whole, and quit whining about your "rights" to thrive on somebody elses engine.

Do you work for G? You don't have to answer that, it doesn't matter.

Just wanted to point out that any time you have a monopoly, you control it. Google is close to having a a monopoly, and they pretty much control most of what goes on, on the web. Monopolies have to operate under certain rules to protect the marketplace. Google is not at that point obviously, but they seem destined to arrive there, and are doing everything they can to succeed at that endeavor.

Some object to that. I am not a big fan of it. But then, no one really cares what I think anyway. Life goes on.

Here's someone else who needs to do some research.

Rupert Murdoch does NOT own Facebook. He doesn't even own MySpace.

Newscorp, of which Murdoch is the biggest shareholder and chairman owns MySpace, but have absolutely nothing to do with Facebook.

      Sheesh.

Although you are right in that Newscorp's (not Murdoch's) MySpace is going down the crapper financially. See my post in the OT forum for more info: http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...cceptable.html

The G is going for total domination. But why wouldn't they? They are always finding new markets to move into and expand and to tell the truth I really like tons of their products and services. Not that they need a plug from me, but it seems like anytime they take on something new they have a fresh approach and seriously consider offing great features that customers want.

Sure privacy may be an issue, but that seems to be how things just are on the InterWeb. Soon I expect them to ID us by our genetic code or we'll have to do a Vulcan mind meld to long in. But it makes perfect sense for them as a business to move into social media. That's why they bought Youtube. Facebook is their number one rival in advertising dollars.

    Its just business.

Facebook is way more dangerous than Google. Don't confuse Facebooks position with that of a victim here, they are not.

And as far as Google goes, well, for a company that gives you/us probably the single most value on the planet you folks sure do hate them. I mean really, you use their engine, you use their tools, and you buy their advertising...if you hated them that much, you are under obligation to stop using them, aren't you?

Start competing for your traffic on Yahoo, Bing, Facebook (since you think they stand up to the bully of google), etc and no longer search, or use services from Google.

Wait a minute now, I didn't ask Google to put my site on their search engine (which I think we are talking about here) they did that on their own accord because I put my site on the web. They came crawling my site.

Why, because they need me to keep their clients supplied with the information they are looking for. Google is using me to attract customers in hopes of getting some of them to click on their ads.

Google is on a vendetta to control as much of the web as they can. And nothing good ever comes from monopolies. That is why there is laws against it. Not only that, but like the government, they pick winners and losers. And the reasons for their picks don't have to have any logical reason. Many times people have no idea when Google says you can't play any more. That is a bully, no if, and or butts.

If I use the search engine, then that is no different than watching broadcast TV, they give me that in return for the hopes of my clicking on an ad. As I said previously. Whether or not I use G, or Y or Bing or whoever, is irevelant.

@Bobjutsu: With all due respect, you sound like a PR shill for google. I have formed my opinion based on my own observations and I do not desist or back down from it. No, I stand by what I say. I will say it again: google is an out of control monster and is far too powerful. Facebook is no angel either but it is a great thing that there is a rival to google. Maybe they will modify and rein in their behavior. As a rule when something gets too big it gets corrupted. Would you say the same thing about the government?
My point is that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I am sure you realise this somewhere underneath. Putting the blame on insignificant little fish like me and others who feel the same way is very dismissive and reeks of arrogance. All I ask for is some fair play and just because google is successful doesn't really give it the right to abuse that influence by poking a finger in others' eyes and disregarding them because it is the most powerful search engine. Controlling the search engines is in many ways controlling the internet although it could be different if more people realised this and chose different search engines more often. I don't want to rely on google alone and you are right about this for sure, but they control more than 80% of the traffic on search engines. So we are forced to accept them if we want to succeed in our online businesses aren't we? So it is in their interest not to unnecessarily alienate those who depend on it for no good reason. Are you saying that people who say they have had their adsense accounts disappear for no reason are all lying? Are you saying no one has any justification to have a gripe with google? I can't really believe you are.
I definitely am all in favour of supporting other competitors to help rein them in.

It seems to me that if Facebook changes over to yahoo mail and yahoo results then google is the one that will suffer. Not sure why google would set up the scenerio where Yahoo can get a boost if Facebook decides to get closer to Yahoo.

yeah. this is how the business works especially since Google and Facebook are being compared lately in terms of IM effectiveness.

but what i've been thinking about this banning is it's a result of Google coming up with Google Me. as i remember, Google Me is the direct competition of FB. since they'll have their own social page, they don't to be connected with others that we use today. just a thought

I'm not a big fan of Google but Facebook does
behave a "little" bit like a hypocrite. They LOVE
do get data out of other companies systems
but don't allow anybody to scrap contact data
    from their own database.

If I were Google I would have blocked Facebook
from scrapping their data years ago.
