This might not be exactly what you;re looking for, but if you create the source document in WORD (oven OOO) you can add a watermark, or even an image as watermark :
1.On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Background group, click Watermark
    2.Do one of the following:
Click a predesigned watermark, such as Confidential or Urgent, in the gallery of watermarks.
Click Custom Watermark, click Text watermark and then select or type the text that you want. You can also format the text.
3.To view a watermark as it will appear on the printed page, use Print Layout view.

How would the watermark stop theft? It seems a person could just strip the text out of there and make a new PDF.

I think I read once that when you put something on the internet there is really no way to stop theft.

Watermarking doesn't stop theft, but it does reduce theft by making it slightly more effort. What it really reduces is random piracy of a document through file sharing sites. It is a lot easier to track down who initially let the file slip.

But what I'm talking about is watermarking legal documents to inform readers they are private and confidential and the penalties for unauthorized viewing and reproduction. Used in house as an extra safety precaution on memos and briefs we send to, or on behalf of, clients. My Lawyers are old fashioned and I'm trying to lead them, slowly, into the wonderful world of a paperless office.

Hooray for working in house for a law firm!
