A Question for the "Video People"

Hey all,

Let me start by saying, I am not here to get your points, and then turn around and try to steal your business. I just want to know how you all can afford to offer video production for (what I consider) insane prices.

I do video production, but it is mainly for broadcast or for tradeshows. I have tried, in the past, to produce videos for the WF, but I was working myself ragged, and not making much! Was I going about it all wrong?

I do not offer online video production, unless an offline client specifically requests it, but I know for a fact, that I cannot offer productions for $12-$20, like I have seen people on here offer. Are you using templates? I just dont understand. Please shed some light for me.

If you do not feel comfortable answering on this thread, please PM me.

Thank you in advance for your info.

Matt

Maybe the quality is poor for the prices they are charging

Those offered here for that kind of money are probably either templateized or Camtasia.

It could be that folks do have the licensing rights to the quality of music and images that you have, on your demo reel, though, and maybe they will make it up in volume.

The technology is cheap & time saving, quality templates are everywhere. It's as simple as that.

So without sounding arrogant...People are okay with having the "same type" of video as others?

This makes sense as to how the videos can be produced so inexpensively. But aren't IMers afraid of prospects seeing the "same type" of video all over the place?

I don't think that there is a group of IM'ers. There are a lot of people with different backgrounds and some of those foks may be OK with having the same type of video and others may not.

In some sales presentations, people are not looking so much for "new and different" as they are for a formulaic approach.

It isn't the same market, but the idea is similar in software development. If folks have to search for the controls on your new software instead of them being in the same place as on otehr software, you are not going to have a lot of happy customers.

Some folks, and some customers, like the idea of something being familiar, it can help make the sales process easier with fewer stumbling blocks.

There are billions, if not trillions (at this point), of videos online. The odds of finding another person with the exact same template are slim, unless you're using the #1 most used template of course. But you get my point here.

Majority of people honestly wouldn't even care if they had already seen it, as long as it is a quality video.

It's like watching the news, they all have the same "templates" more or less but people still watch each station.

I'm new and still learning the video production business but I find that I can easily make $30 an hour by making videos from powerpoint presentations/camtasia. That is all people looking to convert articles to video are looking for. As for the more advanced videos they tend to be templates that people use on programs such as after effects.

One example is a video floating around at the moment that is amazingly good quality but very commonly used. It has a number of "screens" with video playing in each one rotating in a 3D ring while a whole lot of other things happen and it all looks very professional but is obviously a template that takes maybe 5 minutes to put together if you don't include rendering time.

How about a link to examples of what you're talking about.

Video spans a broad spectrum and a lot of what is being touted as 'video' these days is barely video but rather simple screenshots put together. Nothing moves that isn't a transition.

      Real video isn't cheap.

And if you're talking about $100 plug-ins for thousand dollar software...

      Links, we need links...

I completely understand what you all are saying, and I am not trying to argue with it, because it is sound logic, but:

Let me put it this way...

I am a consumer looking for a way to do xyz activity, I Google it, and find 3-4-5...sites offering systems/ebooks/etc explaining how I can use do xyz activity best with such-and-such. I click on each site, and watch each video sales page. the first one catches my eye, it is nicely produced, exciting, and gets its point across effectively. The second is nicely produced, exciting, gets the point across, BUT strangely reminds me of the first video...Now I am wondering why, but I check out the third, and the video is nicely produced, creatively different, and pushes the same point as the other two...

Maybe I am skewed because I make commercials, and I want each one to reflect exactly what the client is expecting, but I think I am making a vilid point. Am I not?

That is the thing with going online. There is a huge number of markets and niches within each of those markets. There is also a huge number of video templates all with tweaks here and there. The more you pay the more the video becomes customized and so it is highly unlikely that you will find three competing websites using the exact same template from the exact same video production service.

If I was getting a video made for my site/business the first thing I would do would be check out my competition and see what they are doing right, wrong and how my video cna be better. If the person I hired to make the video came back with the same basic video then I would be rejecting it within a second.
