I can't tell you when or how often I mail to my lists.

It varies a lot in all the different niches I'm in.

      Regarding prospects/buyers...

My buyer lists are broken down much further — into multi-buyers etc

If the prospects have bought a similar or related product from someone else — they are actually buyers anyway in all but name.

They may not have bought from you yet, but they've already proven themselves.

It's quite disappointing to see people on here say prospect = freebie seeker, this couldn't be further from the truth.

Many prospects may have bought a similar or related product previously, from someone else.

There will be many times that you want to get the same message out to prospects and buyers. You should chain your lists, so that when a prospect gets added to the buyer list they are automatically removed from the prospect list. This will avoid duplicate messages when you broadcast to your entire list. It will also keep them from receiving ads for a product that they already bought.

    Landis:

You've been making a lot of posts lately about the actual details of listbuidling, and I smile each time I read one as they bring back memories of when I first started developing lists.

It's so frustrating at the start, you don't know how often to mail, you don't know what to mail, and you don't know what content you SHOULD mail.

And on top of it there are people with widely differing opinions on "content versus pitch" emails, "content AND pitch emails", or any other number of differences.

You'll never get a consensus opinion to guide you, this isn't like SEO or another more tangible technique.

Instead, the best thing you can do is start setting up the lists and start mailing based on how YOU would like to be treated as a reader in that niche.

Experiment, log the open/click percentages, cut out the emails that don't perform, and duplicate the style/format of the emails that do.

It's that simple really, but it takes a lot of trial and error.

I would give you generic "do this" advice, but every niche is different. Some of my niches don't appreciate being mailed more than once a week. Others email ME if I miss more than a day asking "hey did I miss today's email??".

You never know, and no one can tell you the right answers for yourself.

Just experiment. You're sharp, you'll get it for sure, I have no doubt.
