Quick question re position of your site in Google results

Hi Warriors,

This is just 2 quick, easy questions... the first probably sounds unimportant to most Warriors, but I'd just like to know.

Is there a way to find out exactly what page of the results you're on in the Google results for specific keywords?

Why is this important? I kinda like to know how much harder I have to work based on how badly my site is stuck in the mud.

I know you can run a keyword search and then a 'search in results' to see if your site is even in the results. But it doesn't tell you where it is.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

And I know this next question has been answered before, but...

How long does it take to see your site in the results? yes, I know it's based on how you promote it, but what is the shortest time you can get listed?

I just launched a new site 3 days ago and submitted an article to directories, added 4 posts to my blog and did the old - pinging and social bookmarking thing. So far, I can only find one listing on Page 4 and that is through Digg, not my actual site.

    I'm finding it increasingly more difficult to get my sites indexed in a reasonable time frame. I used to could get them indexed in under a week everytime. Recently I had a site up for 4 weeks with no luck. That's after trying all the tricks in the book (Digg, social bookmarking, RSS feed submissions, etc.).

    What did it take to get it indexed? I ran an Adwords campaign with my landing page as the index of this site and the site was fully indexed less than 3 hours later. I've heard this doesn't work because those are separate processes at Google, but I'm just telling you my experience with this one site.

    Also, I had already uploaded a sitemap to Google's Webmaster Tools, which probably helped as well. This will at least help get your entire site indexed as opposed to just 2 or 3 pages.

    You're looking for a site called GoogleRankings.com.

    Make sure you sign up with Google to get an API before you use it, as it's rather query intensive.

    I've had sites show up pretty quickly in the past. About a year ago I put a new site online and had it on the first page of Google in 7 days.

      Thanks Charlie... that doesn't help me much - because it only gives the top 200 listings. This is a brand new site and I'm sure it's somewhere around a million and something - well, okay, maybe 300,000 since this particular keyword does not have that much competition.

      That's the problem I've found with such services - they only show the top results - like if you're not in the top 100,000 of Alexa, you have no idea where your site stands with them.

      My new site is a WP blog on my server with the plugin that creates the Google sitemap automatically. So I do have the sitemap. As far as AdWords campaigns - I'm a total washout in that department, having never been able to drive traffic without forking out a ton of money after years of trying. Not sure why that is, but after using all the techniques used by the PPC pros, I've given up on that tactic.

    I've tried programs which show you your rankings for keywords, but for me they're a waste of money. I never use them -- and feel guilty because I don't.

    If I want to know, I bump my browser preferences up to 100 results per page and do a manual search. My site may well be at 980 for that keyword. Whatever. Then I enter it into a spreadsheet with the date.

    Next, I look at the top ten sites for the keyword, and see what they're doing. I make a decision to implement ONE strategy and enter it into my calendar.

    You can bump your pages up in the rankings by this method, it works; it just takes a little thought and effort. :-)

    This is the benefit of creating your own sites and blogs; you can give a new site an instant kick start, and it's free. :-)

That's why I posted this question - hoping there was an easier and quicker way. I'd just run through 25 pages when I posted this question. In cases where I figured I was at the end, I kept jumping 15 pages at a time, hoping to get to the end... which never came and I never saw my site.

      Thanks for the tip, Angela. I thought I was going to read that you check them out and copy their strategy, but I guess that's what you meant. Good idea, especially if you run out of ideas.

      That's what I've been doing. This IS a blog as my own site, which is a new approach for me. Usually, I just tack the blog on as part of my site. This is way better. I thought your site would be listed within 7 days, but a few hours? That's great. One site shot up quickly when I linked to it from one of my other sites. I couldn't believe how quickly my second site went from 0 to 2.

      I know Warriors say to only worry whether or not you're on the first 3 pages but it can be helpful to know how deep you are.
