Warning - Don't Give YouTube Your Mobile Phone Number

Just a word of warning for all you YouTubers. If you created a new account, uploaded videos, and find the next time you log in that YouTube want your mobile phone number, don't.

I created a new YouTube account promoting an affiliate product. Unfortunately it had a slide in it alluding to drug use. When I tried to get into my account this morning, YouTube required me to verify myself with my mobile phone number, saying there was "suspicious activity" on my account. I entered my mobile number, and they texted me back a code, which I then entered into the form. Voila, that took me to a page saying I had violated the TOS and had one strike against me!

Shucks, I gave them my mobile for my main account, so now YouTube have cunningly linked the two.

If ever you get asked by YouTube to verify your account using your mobile phone, DON'T. First check to see if you videos are still up by going directly to the URL. If you see a "terminated" message instead of your usual video, your dead.

Give up on the account and move on.

Don't try to argue or reason with them. In matters like these they are brain dead.

Cheers,
Max

Couldn't you just not engage in "suspicious activity" and stick to their TOS instead?

I wouldn't ever trust the monkeys at Google to make smart determinations about what does and doesn't violate their own TOS.

That is a good point and in fairness to the OP, when you look at some of video's on Youtube, it's hard to imagine they actually have rules on what could be shown.

Thanks for the word of warning.

I had a similare incident with my Google Adwords account.

I was PPC advertising to a squeeze page when I was found out. As you know Google hates squeeze pages so they froze my account, not just that campaign but all of them....

So whilst I was trying to rectify and appease them (with no luck whatsoever) I set up a new account for the campaigns that were deemed as acceptable but I used the same authentication email address.

Once I was unable to satisfy Google with the original account they disabled it. Then almost instantly they must have spotted the same authentication email address and disabled my other account. Even though the campaigns were perfectly acceptable.

I no longer touch google for ppc other than to a general business site.

Does anyone else have similar experiences?

Yea, with google when you create a new account.
Use a new email address, family or friends address, new credit card,
            change your ip address.

Google has really gotten out of hand....They don't like internet marketers.

Yeah, but nobody told me about it. Had to find out the hard way. Who would have thought that a picture of lots of smoke, with a nose poking out from the side would lead it to be flagged as "drug use"? Suspicious activity, my ass.

Here's YouTube's TOS for anyone who hasn't read it. Make sure you aren't caught out if you are doing lots of video marketing on YouTube.

You can't argue with Youtube, just be careful you don't offside them.

Actually, I'm kind of with you on this in a way. You can type in just about anything horrific you can think of into Youtube and find a video on it.

Having done a little experimant this morning I actually find it hard to figure out what you did to get kicked out!

Some of the video's on there are a disgrace!

            Jason,

You should have seen some of the stuff I saw this morning.

Made me want to have a drink at 10am

I can't quite figure out what the OP could have done!

            EDIT. That is pretty sick.

Well, that's completely on you then. Why would you use the same phone number for both accounts. If you wanna fool them, do it right, with unique information for each account.

If YouTube detect "suspicious activity" then your videos are no longer active as far as i know. The only way to get them back is to verify your phone number.

Ive heard that people have used the same mobile number for different accounts and there hasn't been a problem.

OK you can get a phone at radio shack for $15 with $10 worth of minutes to use. This is great for when you do major campaigns. Most of us like to track our response. Also, there are many other services out there that have numbers they give away.

For a while I was using say now. However, Google bought them up.

Asking for your mobile number is just for verification purposes. They don't ask for money to restore your account.
