Learning from Weather Forecasters in IM
During my twenty minute speech, I carried with my a series of index cards which had written on them main ideas and nothing else. It was my job as the presenter to take these main ideas and construct thoughtful sentences that logically lead the audience from one idea on to the next. When a weather reporter tells you the weekly forecast, it is their job to take the main ideas (weather reports) and draw conclusions, explain patterns and keep the presentation flowing from one explanation to the next.
A great presenter does not memorize their speech from start to finish, but rather, memorizes the key points which need to be made and then fills in the blanks on the fly.
There are several benefits to presenting this way, mainly the ability to read your audience and incorporate personal touches into the speech itself. If you do a good job of reading your audience then you may be able to add their silent thoughts into the speech as well as try to dive into greater detail should you see more confused frowns than accepting grins. Tying in members of the audience based on what they do or what experience you have had with them is also a great practice used by the better presenters.
All this can be learned simply by watching any weather reporter on a daily basis.
Oh and don't forget to smile, that is the weather reporter's greatest weapon. A smile makes a rainy day seem ok and a sunny afternoon only brighter. Always remember to smile!
