If you're interested in started a real business - as opposed to buying a lottery ticket, I would recommend starting with something to give you a somewhat comprehensive and systematic overview. One book that comes to mind is:

Scott C. Fox. e-Riches 2.0: Next-Generation: Marketing Strategies for Making Millions Online. AMACOM, 2009. 336 pages; $16.33 paperback (Amazon).

(My MBA was not marketing, but I can readily envision a graduate-level course using this as the required text.)

Unlike the pixie dust crowd, Scott is not some anonymous charlatan or dilettante. He's widely known and respected for his expertise, and a good writer. This book is a easy read that provides the foundation everyone really needs to make it in this business.

Once you've read that, I recommend you move on to content rather than getting entangled in all the intracies of marketing and monetizing. The truth is quickest, easiest, cheapest way to get targeted traffic to your site or your blog is with original, quality content. TMWOT, content is the lifeblood of IM, not something I'm willing to outsource wrecklessly.

Janice Redish. Letting Go of the Words: Writing Web Content that Works. Morgan Kaufmann, 2007. 384 pages; $29.57 paperback (Amazon).

A lot of this is taken up with screen shots and examples to supplement and clarify the text.
