4 months 24k visits 202k page views and not even €50 euro in advertising! Help! lol

Hello all,

Basically been doing a bit of IM now since January of 2011, wish I started sooner! My latest project "Watch This Cam" although it has been a lot more successful than my previous projects is just not making me money. I am getting the hits, the page view etc but between adsense and my CPA network I have made maybe 50 euros.

In general since the site launch in March 2011 to today I have had 24,281 Visits, 202,375 Pageviews.

I have done a bit of backlinking etc and to be honest there was only really advertising on the site for the last 2 months.

At the moment I have just the general google adsense block and 2 other similar CPA offers.

Is there anything I could do to help me make more money?

I know due to the nature of my site its not say your typical niche "website" but anyways I would like your opinions if possible. I am not doing this full time at the moment, its just in my spare time when I am not working. I do put in a lot of hours though.

The site is the first link in my footer, if anyone has any suggestions I would be glad to hear

You could start by putting some ads on it? I don't see when I go to that site. If this was just a joke to make me click the link, it worked.

Okay look here Street Cam in United States You can see where I have the ads placed.

Oh cams don't work in Internet Explorer! But you shouldn't be using that terrible browser anyway

I can see a couple of things that might be holding you back...

First off, using a video player that does not work with Internet Explorer is sending a portion of your traffic away. I guarantee it. I don't care how juicy your footage is, people are not going to install a new browser just for the peep show.

Check the stats in your control panel. You might think people shouldn't be using such a terrible browser, but they do. Your stats will tell you what percentage of your visitors you're blowing off. When you see the number, I'm guessing the smiley face goes away...

Second, you have a classic 'time-waster' site here. People won't come to click ads or offers. They'll come to see people getting freaky or doing something stupid on security cams. Your ads are just an interruption.

You may want to look into one of the banner networks that pays you per exposure, rather than for clicks, form submits or purchases. At even €1 euro per 1,000 exposures (called CPM for 'cost per thousand'), you would have made four times as much as you did this way.

Yes unfortunately I have looked deeply into resolving this IE problem about 4000 of those visits were probably wasted by users getting impatient and leaving. I am still looking for a solution to this but it is duly noted thanks.

Secondly very good idea, about the CPM ad although I approached one network they turned me down due to lack of content.

I might look into a different network and argue my case. Thanks for that!

I'd put the ads above the video for sure. And I'd also figure out how to make it work with IE. It might suck, but a ton of people still use it.

Also, maybe just try something like a single email submit CPA, like a "Free Ipad" or whatever.

At the moment I have the daily deal which is just a single mail submit, seems to working the best at the moment. Might change it for a few of them alright though thanks

cool site man. yea, the ad placements are fine. i clicked through like 20 pages and all the ads were the same tho. This is adsense and nothing you can do about it. the ads werent relevant to me so i wouldnt have clicked any of them. this is tough bc you dont really have a niche. maybe you can try and go to linkshare and go affiliate. sign up with a company that sells cameras or spy cameras lol

Thanks Yes its a pretty random site to say the least. I have a few ideas for the site alright, but spy camera's hmm maybe
Ya the ads are mainly aimed at Irish customers as about 70% of the traffic is from there

Oh well just gonna keep updating it etc. Its more of a learning curve for me, learning a lot of web design as well as the SEO side of things

If they really wanted to see the cameras then would they do a survery or email submit from a locked content gateway? Give them a tease timer for a few seconds or even a minute or two then have the pop up content locker and if they are interested in more then they should do a quick survey or zip submit right? Good Luck!

    Hi there,

bad traffic does not convert. Where did your traffic come from? Free organic traffic converts best.

Good point well, maybe 15% is from search engines 30% direct traffic, rest is from referring sources FB etc.

Organic traffic would be a lot easier except I have to compete with random chat I,e the millions of chat roulette versions out there. Not as easy as you might think.

It has been getting better though, and just recently went up to PR3.

I do get a lot of direct traffic, probably just due to the domain name. In terms of search traffic its only about 10% however it is getting better!

You could argue that its not quality traffic but how would you differentiate between the two, I know if you were talking about a particular niche say football then you would need more quality traffic but would it really matter with this site. Who doesn't like live cams

Went back and looked at your domain name, and you are indeed probably getting a lot of type in traffic. However... I'm going to go out on a limb here and argue that those typing it into their address bar are looking for a very specific type of content.

Not denying that. But like I just pointed out something tells me that a majority of internet users who love live-cams are looking for the ones that point at something a lot different than yours do.

Hey I saw on trademe.co.nz someone is selling Aucklandwebcams.co.nz I would call ask to see their bus plan and ad revenue methods etc but tell them you are going to buy it ( it may be a good deal?)

Also I would brainstorm product fit eg look at regionalisation listings also try to work out why people are using your site (someone recommended an on exit ask script which you can survey customers) from that you can work out what people are after

    Eg
    To see fights : UFC
To be a good civilian : put up a cash prize for any crime spotted that results in a convictionand charge businesses to load their cam feeds to your site (eg $25/ week) call it "civilian watch"
To see traffic : drop-shipping of gps or traffic data feeds for tom-tom etc
Just in general curiosity ? CPM especially target local businesses I would farm lead out of google places
To see people out clubbing: dating sites pr chat/dating lines

Wow Jay, never even thought about something like that. Thank you! Some great examples as well. I will look into lots of these, I am sure there is better ways of monetizing my traffic, at least I am getting the traffic.

You're going to have a hard time monetizing that traffic. You could try selling kits for people to set up their own cams.

Find affiliate products that are atleast somehow related to the content of your website, and start introducing them to your visitors, facebook fans, newsletter subscribers..

Make a profile(s) of your visitors if possible (you can make a survey to find out things about your visitors/email subscribers ) then think what these people need (buy), find the best products and tell them about it.

      Hope this helps : )

I like the site. It's a terrific idea and clearly people like it. I do, however, understand why you have a monetization problem.

When I was on your site, I would have liked to choose webcam locations. If you offer a list, then see about catering ads to geographic locations. Perhaps vacation home rentals, other travel programs - assuming your visitors are people wanting to check out what their prospective travel destinations look like.

I suspect people also like looking at webcams of places where they live. It's like it being cool to see your home town on the national news. This way you could feature some monetization method for people living in the same places. I appreciate my suggestions are opposite, but it depends on your traffic. Testing will dictate.

You can always have one of those ads that popup after a certain number of pages... I was curious enough to go through 15-20 pages, so if u place a full page ad after a user viewed 5 pages im sure they will be curious enough to click it off and continue browsing.

Look into those, Im not sure who supplies them.

    Hmmm.... *WARNING ADULT LINK BELOW*

    Affilate Program

They pay $10,000.00 (usd) commission on their top program lol
You make one or two of those a year and you make some good money.

They also pay per lead or something I think. I don't know yet, I haven't figured them out yet. But you might take a gander. You could also put up an entrance page that says this'

    What are you looking for?

    Adult Cams

    Or

    City Cams?

    lol

This one also has an affiliate program: (also adult)

    Adult Vacations

At the end of the day, you have to put in the work to make any affiliate program work for you. There are literally thousands (just think Clickbank, JVZoo, etc.)

No offense. But to me the site is not simple and clean.

Why not make it a simple page with a call to action that will capture email addresses. I think what you are doing could really capture curiosity.
If you offer some type of free gift. I really think you could entice those visitors to submit you their email address. After that. I would make this a cam series.

Why not send people recorded moments from your cams.

As you build a user base. You need to find a way to throw in affiliate products, etc.

I didn't do a lot of research here. But the design needs a complete overhaul.
