A silly Wordpress question.....

A wed developer has built a Wordpress blog for me. Are there any files to hand over like when a developer builds a static html website for you or is everything within my Wordpress account when I log in?

Also what will I now type into the browser to gain access into Wordpress now...www.domain/....?

Help appreciated!
Thanks.

He's probably designed a theme for you, so you could reasonably expect to receive the .psd files associated with the themes graphics if there are any, and I'd also want a zipped folder containing the theme itself.

You'd type your domain name into a browser to view your site, and to gain access to the backend you'd type yoursite.com/wp-admin

If all he's done is install wordpress and maybe added a theme and some plugins, you probably won't receive anything other than the login info etc.

    • All the WordPress related files should be on the server.
    • You should back them up and take them off line.
    • You should also change the password and/or remove the account that your designer was using unless there is an ongoing need for them to login.
    • You can login to your WordPress website by adding 'wp-login.php' to your domain name, like : example.com/wp-login.php

I have a free checklist for setting up your WordPress website online at The Ultimate WordPress Setup Checklist.
It will help you figure out what to do next.

At least you have to ask:
    1. Original theme they used to your site (theme in their original form before got customized)
2.PSD files if they created graphics for you
    3. Login details

Don't forget to change your password like suggested by another post above.

I hired a company to design our website and they did a good job and delivered it on time. However, they did not give me 100% access to all of the files. As there is an order form that runs thru PayPal, they didnt want me to get into it and screw it up by making changes, so they did changes there for me. I was ok with that as I didnt want anything to go wrong and I didnt know anything about editing that part of the site.

They started nickeling and diming me with charges anytime I wanted something done. I had a one year deal with them and just before that year was up I found another web guy who was able to get into the site and give me access to everything. We changed the password immediately. I dont go into the PayPal stuff, I still dont know anything about that part of my site. The new guy is very agreeable and makes changes for me when asked.

So what you get from your guy may be all or part of it, ask him what you are getting. Discuss it if you dont like what he says.

One thing to be aware of - you don't actually have any rights to the designer 'work' files (PSD, AI, etc.) unless you've specifically arranged for that in your contract.

There really isn't a "handoff" of files when a WP site is done, as you should have a functioning site when the work is through.

You should immediately copy the wp-content folder (this folder contains your themes and plugins folders) on your server to your computer. Then make and download a backup of the database. Those two items contain the whole of your WP site, and are all you need to get a duplicate up and running if needed.

As was mentioned above you should immediately change the password to your hosting account and your WP login details. You might even go so far as to create a new Administrator user then delete any other users registered.

Your theme should have all of the files in place. The scripting that the developer did for you, should be in on your server. I am curious though. did you ask the developer about the files yet?

  • depending on what set up he has done, the usual login address for a wp website is http://www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

    Moneyland,
Ask them for the FULL PATH to the files.
It will be something like /public_html/themes/etc.

    Wrong!

That's not the place to look and verify what files and folders you have in a theme.

The magic word is FTP! - You should use a FTP client (software), like FileZilla, to connect to your host server and verify what files are there in the
    example.com/wp-content/themes/your-theme-name/ folder

Thanks Istvan. Ok, I have the file path address

      domain.com/wp-content/themes/wordpressreviewtheme/images/

I really don't know what to do next as I don't know how to get and even use FTP client software and how to connect to my host server. Could my host provider give me some support with this or can anyone on here give me an idea of what to do next?

      Thanks again.

There are many options, but I'll try to make it simple for you. You can download FileZilla here

    FileZilla - Client Download

    FZ documentation is here

Software documentation can be a bit dry at times, so for easier learning try this

    filezilla tutorial - YouTube

To answer your question, yes, typically, your hosting provider will provide at least a minimal level of support on these types of things. They may, however, prefer you use their web-based file transfer solution, rather than an FTP client... but you'll find out when you talk to them.

Contacting your host is a great first line for getting this type of assistance.

    Hope this helps.
