How hard is it to update Wordpress?

I haven't bothered updating my Wordpress on my own blogs but I have a customer who I created a site for that wants her Wordpress updated.

I just searched some instructions on updating Wordpress and it looks really complicated. So I'm wondering is it really worth the trouble updating it?

There is a plugin that does it automatically for you. Easy Peasy.

It's really easy. The most important thing is to do a backup first.

There are step-by-step instructions. There's a simple version too; maybe you were looking at the more detailed one.

Basically, you do a backup. Upload the new WordPress. And, then you're pretty much done.

The biggest issue would be if you've done any custom programming on it. You have to also be careful of whether the theme is compatible with the newer version. Watch the plugins too, as sometimes they may be incompatible. And don't overwrite all the old stuff; some you'll want to keep. The instructions tell you all that.

Usually, it's a lot simpler than it sounds.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

As simple as updating in your cPanel>Fantastico area. That is the ONLY PLACE you should be updating your Wordpress from. This will not affect any of your blogs contents of the template.

If you do it through your WP-admin area you chance losing ALL your posts.

If you do it through Fantastico in your cPanel, it will automatically create a backup for you too.

REPEAT! - This is the ONLY way you should be updating your existing Word Press Site!

I don't have Fanastico and I've never had a problem with upgrading WordPress, aside from broken plugins.

If it breaks your WP installation, try disabling all of your plugins first.

I've never had a problem with it and I've done it nearly 50 times.

If you back up yoru posts/db, then no reason not to use the plugin.

I always backup my wp-content and plugins directory then just upload over the top and I've never had a problem. If you aren't using cpanel or fantastico, ftp is quick and easy.

I would backup your database too, or at least export posts and comments via wordpress.
