Is generating traffic a steady process or a one-time thing?

Hey guys,

Since I started my blog and am still working hard on getting traffic, I was wondering if traffic generation a steady process where you progressively increase visitors

or

Is it about using strategies that would make your traffic explode and gain a huge following almost instantly?

I am wondering because my friends are like, "Yeah yeah you should totally do this and buy that service because it would make you front page of something etc etc"

What do you guys think?

  • A steady process that sticks. Following your friends advice might get you lots of traffic quickly, but will it be buying traffic and that traffic could disappear just as quickly.

    What I think is whether you get the traffic progressively or by explosion, you should do all you can to keep the traffic. Progressive traffic is good because that's the kind of traffic you can maintain. By building it progressively means you gradually build a solid presence and impose trust. People discover you gradually and begin to like what you offer.
  • When it comes to blogging, I have two "authority" blogs, where I see traffic rising each and every day. But these types of blogs take time and effort. The content has to be, in Seth Godin's words "remarkable" and there is a time factor involved with interacting with other bloggers, twittering, facebooking, leaving comments on other blogs in similar niches and guest blogging.

    I also have been creating many 30 - 40 page minisites since 2007, which I promote in an entirely different way that I do for the Authority blogs. This is done with a variety of automated tools and outsourced link builders.

    With the authority blogs, I find that traffic and links increases without any type of promotion due to the nature of the content on these blogs but the minisites is different. I continually need to promote them, then I will back off a bit to see how they hold rank for a variety of keywords, if the do, then I do more link building on up and coming minisites. If they start dropping in rankings when I stop the promotion I immediately continue the promotion process.

    So generating traffic really depends on your business model and the source of traffic you are using.

    • Getting traffic for website is the most toughest job . If you have money to spent on advertising then there is no problem . but to get traffic from search engine will take lots of time and real work .
  • Generating traffic is an ongoing process that usually takes time. You can always speed up the time it takes by using paid traffic like PPC. The general rule of thumb is the more money you can spend, the faster you can get traffic. The less money you have to spend, the slower the process will be.

    That said, there are ways to work smarter (not harder). As you build up your traffic, your site will take on a life of it's own as you leverage the time and effort you've already invested. Syndicating your content and leveraging your social networks will help you get the traffic you need and reach that "tipping point" much sooner than you would otherwise.

    I'm pre-launching my new business this fall (and launching officially in January), so I'm heavily focused on traffic and list-building right now. And I've found some tremendous resources:

    1. Kim Roach's Traffic Dashboard

    This is a great, yet inexpensive course ($39) on generating your first 1,000-3,000 subscribers in 30 days. I highly recommend it.

    I can't recommend this site enough! I just discovered it last week and I'm SO IMPRESSED with all of the information she provides.

    A word to the wise:

    Before you run off and stay up all day and all night working to generate traffic, make sure you're super clear on WHO your target market is and that you have a clear plan and process in place for building your list once the traffic arrives. (No sense in spending all that time and effort driving traffic for nothing!)

    Once you're really clear on your business and how you'll build your list, pick 4-5 of the BEST traffic strategies for your business/niche and just focus on those. Successful people often say that success is just a matter of doing a few things over and over again. It's too easy to jump from one thing to the next with no focus -- and no results.

    If you're starting from scratch, you might employ a bunch of traffic strategies to build your seed list and get off the ground. Once you've done that though, just focus on 4-5 and do those over and over again.

  • Generating traffic can be a one time activity if you find the right person to outsource your traffic generation too. However, finding the right person, service, process requires an ongoing process, learning, failure and experimentation. In addition, there is the obvious financial cost associated with outsourcing.

    Any way you look at, the process will take time and consistent action.

    • Curious how you can make this statement. Can you share what "one time activity" you can utilize to generate traffic to your site or blog? I'm sure I and others would pay handsomely for this information.

      -From my experience generating traffic is a continuous process. As soon as you sit on your laurels you give the competition an opportunity to catch up. Even the largest of the large need to continuously market their brands. - winlin
  • Its about steady and repeat traffic.

    If your blog stands out from the rest then eventually you get that many repeat and happy visitors that linkbuilding is pretty much taken care of for you from your visitors.

    They will bookmark content and point there friends towards it, alot might favourite the site, talk about it ion forums ect and there you go lots of happy repeat visitors and new daily visits.
  • Social sites are excellent to use for increasing traffic of the websites hence the type of the site always decide the amount of the traffic you are going to get. So we cannot judge the steady pace or a fast pace of a traffic in a site
  • To follow up on what AlexSid said, the type of site makes all the difference. I have a blog that I create a post on pretty much everyday. The site has had a few explosions in traffic, but that was generally when one of my posts was really, really popular or one of my keywords went golden (first page of Google).

    Otherwise, it has been steady, yet almost always growing. I have only had 2 months where traffic stalled or declined in the past 18 months.

    Other sites, I do not care if I use automated tools on, because I have not spent nearly as much time. I would gladly blast a site that is new and looks shaky with backlinks to see how it works. If it does work then I am more confident on using it on other sites. If it does not then at least it was a site I spent a lot of time on.

    Create guinea pig sites where you do not care what happens to them. It makes life a lot easier on the other sites.

    • You have to start only once they its a steady process. .. You have to just keep thing going and put more efforts to improve the results.
  • Yes, steady process. Sometimes it is very tiring, sometimes it is fun. You have to work on the fun part. Trust me.

    If you want steady traffic
    I recommend these four things:

    1. Create High Value Content (stuff your readers don't get anywhere else.)
    2. Blog Often (check out this post)
    3. Guest Post and become friend with other leaders in your niche
    4. Build a subscriber base - preferably via email (check out this post)
  • Traffic, whether online or offline is a must. The goal for any business
    is to have perpetual highly targeted traffic
  • There are millions of ways to get traffic. Paid advertising with Adwords/7Search or any other PPC/PPV campaign. Submit your site to stumbleupon.com, share it on facebook/twitter, answer relevant questions to your niche on Yahoo! Answers and link back to your page, I mean the list goes on and on.
