Screen shot software that can capture anything?

Hey guys and gals,

Just a quick post to see if I can get some quick help about this. I currently have ScreenGrab for a screen shot software but it doesn't allow me to select just anything I want, and it's only for the internet.

I need to take a screen shot of just a few sections of my PDF's to post on my site, and so I need to be able to drag and create a box around whatever section I need and create a screen shot out of that.

It can be a free or paid software...of course free is always welcome though

I use ScreenGrab all the time & can grab any part of my desktop whether I'm online or not. Just open it, hit F8 (that's for grabbing a portion of the screen). Be sure to click the "View" button so you can see the image & then save it to wherever you want.

That's what you need and it's portable - meaning no installation, and you can carry it on your USB stick everywhere. Plus it's also free!

If you're using Windows Vista, it comes with a tool called "Snipping Tool" that allows you to drag a box around whatever you want to capture and then you can either copy it to the clipboard or save it as a file.

Just click start menu & start typing "snipping tool" (without quotes).

  It sounds like he doesn't want to do any post processing to the image. He'd rather just select what he wants for the image without having to crop, etc.

  That is what I was about to say Kathy. I have never understood getting software to do screen shots. There is a print screen button that will capture the whole screen and if you hold the Alt key too it will capture the active screen only if that is not full screen size.
  
  I have made PDF files of the screen and then selected sections and did a copy and pasted it into my graphics software to make graphics or create other PDF files with them. And this will work on computers from Win95 to Vista I believe. I have never used anything else and it works like a charm every time I need it.

  Yes but you have to import it into a graphic program to save it. Screenshot programs save the screenshot automatically as a image.

Snag It is my favorite. You could also use the print screen function and crop that pic in Paint, Photoshop, etc.

I've tried many of the program's mentioned here and can honestly say that in my opinion, nothing can beat SnagIt. I would struggle to do my day job without it now, and it's proven invaluable for IM!

Another vote for Snagit as well - I also love all the other features they have, like being able to enlarge, shrink, add edges to the captured image...and they even have video capture too!

For some reason Print screen f12 or whatever doesn't
work on my XP laptop. I use a screen capure software
because it's easier than trying to make windows work
right.

Print Screen only works if what you are saving it into is a Microsoft product. For ex, you can take a picture of what you see on the screen & try to email it to tech support but unless you're using MS Outlook, it won't work. I found that out when I had to do a little computer help over the phone.

  As it not only lets you capture anything on the screen, pictures, videos, etc., but also extracts and adds pictures, audios, etc. from/to videos. Not to mention a zillion other features.

  I vote for SnagIt.
  Not only grabs snapshots it will also record .avi videos that you can then edit and convert to .flv to post on the web as training videos.
