The testosterone-laced words threat -- err, I mean THREAD...

I remember a comedian (G. Carlin?) doing a riff on how violent words are used to describe SUCCESS in comedy (like, "I really KILLED tonight!," etc.) Even the word PUNCHline.

Same holds true for marketing, it seems.

ANNIHILATOR, KILLER, CRUSH IT, DOMINATION, ASSASSIN, BOMB, etc. etc.

Please feel free to add onto this list + thread. I'm sure there are HUNDREDS of these.

Hurry, before google SLAPS you!

Perhaps this accounts for their wide usage today in online copywriting?

IM does seem to be dominated by men.

However, all of my own IM mentors are women. I didn't consciously choose them because they were women, but because they really resonated with me.

I didn't realize it initially, but all of the male, violent terms mentioned here, so prevalent in IM, really turned me off. Not that there aren't some fine men to learn from in IM, but I needed a model. And words like "domination", "ninja", etc. would sound totally inauthentic coming from me. I just don't talk like that,

Fortunately, I found some seriously successful women with some really serious RESULTS to learn from. And I've been a really happy camper ever since.

I've only recently become aware of how the whole male/female thing in marketing has affected my choices in IM and who I spend money with. Willie Crawford recently tweeted out a promotion he was an affiliate for, but as soon as I clicked over and saw the first few seconds of the video, I clicked away. The video had a robot in it and was about auto-building sites. (AutoBuildIt?)

VERY male and absolutely NOT applicable to me and what I'm doing right now. I'm a HUGE fan of IM and love learning everything about it. But opting in or further engaging with that promotion would be a complete waste of my time (and money). My business, while not specifically targeting women, is decidedly more feminine in tone.

In the beginning, all of the male language didn't affect me too much. If it was good info, I opted in or bought. Now that I've settled on my business model and niche, I mostly ignore that stuff. I have a sound education in IM. Now it's about becoming the businesswoman I want to become, which means modeling other women in business.

Even though I am male, when mrktng msgs drift over into MACHISMO (as many of them do), they also tend to trip the Pomposity-Meter. Brings to mind "ganstas" with knit caps, etc. That just makes me roll my eyes and think, "oh I see, these 'homies' are using IMing to 'bank enough coin' to buy some fancy rims for their riced out sports cars -- not to build a business."

I know, I know... there are many, many warriors who ARE building a legit biz, etc. I do see THAT side of the coin out here too! (thank goodness) Let's just say we have a marvelously diverse bunch of people here!

LOL Thanks for the laugh. Very true!

My current mentor is super feminine and that's a huge part of what attracted me to her. She's physically attractive (without being some supermodel tripped out on plastic surgery), but it's more than that. Her manner, her voice is very soft and feminine. She's unassuming, very non-threatening. She's also very warm and personable -- a GREAT coach!

Yes she's a no-nonsense and result-oriented, super successful. And a wife and mother of 4 to boot!

I really love her femininity. Her target market IS women and her entire business, site design, colors, copy, etc. is decidedly feminine. She's a fantastic role model for any woman in business.

Good insights here. What triggers would you say are more female oriented? Besides not using robots and ninjas.

Peter Drew really killed it with Brute Force SEO. Nailed it. Crushed the competition. Dominated the market. Etc. And he has the whole boxing theme to go with it, with boxing gloves and everything. I somehow suspect his results would not have been quite so awesome if he were marketing himself as "The Gentleman's Guide to SEO" or "How To Make It To The Front Page Of Google Without Upsetting Anyone."

My most successful headlines on Ezinearticles, that steered tens of thousands of people to my website over the course of a couple of years, had words like that - "turbocharge" in one of them, "blast your way to the front of the line" in another one.

Using these aggressive phrases is kind of like using long form sales letters - people complain about them, and they are in a way kind of ridiculous and cheesy, but the reason they still exist is - they work.

Dana makes some excellent points. Copywriting is extremely important in marketing. And my mentors are all very, VERY sharp copywriters in their own write... I mean right.

And I don't mean to imply that I NEVER use words like "dominate" or "turbocharge." But there's a difference between using those words to boost the impact of your message and using it as a theme that's so over the top and...well, violent. Using an image like the crosshairs of a rifle is good marketing and I might very well use it myself. But terms like "eat your competition alive"??? Probably not. (I might use "eat your competition's lunch" though. )

That's just semantics, but I hope you get my drift. Sometimes, it's just SO full of machismo and over the top that it turns me off -- and is totally inauthentic if I do it.

Here are my top three mentors. Take a look at their sites and see what you think. The copywriting is stellar. Not at all flowery or "shy." But not full of violent terms and images.

            1. Sheri McConnell -- SmartWomenInstitute.com

Sheri is my current main mentor and the woman I mentioned who is so wonderfully feminine. She's super sharp and successful though.

Take a look at her site to see her writing style.

            2. Ali Brown -- AliBrown.com

Ali's "Online Success Blueprint" is my IM blueprint. Her marketing copy is very, VERY sharp and will have you drooling for the product. (I bought it twice!) But there's nothing violent or "male" about it.

Online Success Blueprint® System 2.0: Online Marketing Made Easy

            3. Carrie Wilkerson -- Barefoot-Executive.com

You can see an example of her sales page here:

            Fill Your Stadium NOW

Very compelling, but nothing violent or "male" about it.

Another one for her "Social Media Made Simple" course:

Think Social Media is Too Complicated?

Powerful marketing. Powerful copywriting. NOTHING violent or over the top (male-style).

Daniel, I hope this clarifies what I'm talking about. These women are super successful and certainly not wallflowers. But they don't need violence/violent images and other elements of male machismo to be successful.

I love what they do and they're all EXCELLENT role models for women in business.

If male machismo is your style and it resonates with your audience, go for it! And as I've said, it's not that I haven't bought from a lot of men who used these elements in their marketing (as long as it wasn't TOO "in-your-face"). I've gotten a lot of good information from men.

But when it comes to MODELING someone and becoming the person (woman) I want to be in business, I have to ignore all of the male machismo and violent images in the hype and look to the ladies.

In all seriousness, if you look at the stats, you'll find that the majority of purchasing decisions are made by women.

There is great merit in using sales language that is amicable to the fairer sex.

It all comes down to knowing who your buyer really is... something that I and probably most others do not put enough research into.

I recall seeing a site recently where on the landing page, it asked the visitor to select if they were male or female. Each had a dedicated sales page accordingly.

I also suspect that the use of these macho terms is due to (a) people copying others because they believe it's the best way... and (b) people's failure to grasp the true meaning of using picture / emotional words in their copy.
