Less than a week ago I was at a training session for work where they were going over admin functions for a new software system being installed, and wouldn't you know that Passw0rd was the password they were using. Awesome.

Haha... nice... i use most of them but not for my personal use.... just for some other work... reason is that these all are easy to learn n write.... 123456, qwerty, 654321... very easy to write threw your keyboard.. so use them mostly....

Mine is a funny story. I got mad when trying to reset my password once back when the internet was really first getting popular. I just set it to whywontthiswork and that has been the password ever since.

Honestly though, that address is so bogged down with email lists, I pretty much ditched the usage of it entirely. Good thing, since it seems like the most obvious passwords are the easiest to guess.

I see my customers frequently use their first name or last name as password. Sometimes combined with a number like 7 or 27.

Even when I mail them with an explanation that it is not secure, they rarely change it.

LOL This is a funny post - and funny enough I have seen a few of those passwords myself over the years - Never on any of my accounts though mind you, I've always used small letters + capital letters + numbers as standard, but on an ex girlfriends O2 account you will find a password from the list used.

It's weird, when your clued up about using the internet and computers, you find it hard to believe that anyone would be so stupid as to use a password like this - it would take even the most novice hacker minutes to access your account! - But it does happen!

Even more complex passwords are easy to brute force crack with a passwords list if the user hasn't bothered to use numbers, letters and sumbols.

I sincerely hope nobody here uses weak passwords, for their own sake.

I made the mistake of using the log in credentials I used for a gmail account for another service. This jerk got my account suspended. It was an account that I mainly used to avoid spam, but it was still annoying.

For passwords, I turn on the TV or radio, or pick up a book and pull a random word then add some non alphabetic characters.

I almost always use a unique password for each site.

Two things:

1> Most sites that "check" for password strength will give you a strong rating for a 6 to 8 letter word, starting with a capital letter and ending with two numeric digits. "password" is weak, but "Password01" is strong.

2> I used to work with a company that thought they were doing a great thing by requiring the admin to change passwords quarterly. He started out fine, but got so tired of people forgetting that he settled on the Capital+2 digits formula. When even that proved too complicated, he started simply incrementing the digits so if your password didn't work you simply add 1 to the last two numbers. I went back to do another project, and shocked the admin when he found me logged in and working. When he asked how I got in, I told him I simply counted how many quarters I'd been gone and did the arithmetic...

The easiest way to make sure you have have the most secure passwords are always using at least one capital letter, one lowercase letter, one number, and one special character (ie. Qwerty6#)

I use the number 1 because I've only had one dog. Added her name to it and thought that was fine. Got an alert from gmail saying someone had tried to access my email. So, I added her lifespan to it. No way anybody is going to know how many years, months or days she lived.

Now that she's passed on almost six years ago, still use it but feel a little bit guilty cause next to me is now my cat, lol Since I never really wrote down my cat's name, havent decided yet if I should spell it "ty" or "tie". Second choice seems more female to me.

Those are lame passwords, but I suspect most hackers obtain passwords not by guessing but either by breaking into your system or getting you to reveal it in a sneaky way. I just read a book called Ghost in the Wires by a famous hacker named Kevin Mitnick. I couldn't understand the computer jargon at all, but apparently he relied heavily on what is called social engineering in the hacking world. This involves getting people to reveal sensitive information by posing as someone legitimate. Kind of like those fake bank emails everyone gets, but much more sophisticated.

When I think about it, if I was a hacker, I might try a few obvious passwords like "1234", but I wouldn't spend hours guessing at ones like "superman." Mitnick also mentions in that book that they have password cracking programs out there, which takes away the need for guessing.

Kevin mitnick was on TV 2 nights ago.... and was one of the most wanted hackers in the US.

He was much more sophisticated than a guy sitting behind a keyboard typing letters and numbers, and guessing.

What you must realise is that there is nothing more powerful than information. Kevin just used it in a way for him to gain usernames and passwords without much work at all. Infact in his book he talks about how much fun he had faking identities, and how he used empathy to get his victims to straight out give passwords to him. LOL. A very clever approach, however it landed him in jail.

Just like there are different ways to get traffic to your site, there are different ways to crack and hack passwords. Even today I am amazed at how unsecure people's websites and data really is. So it really is another friendly reminder to check and make sure we are not letting prying eyes in.
