Here is a little free tool from Google I use all the time. Its called Google Alerts and for you who have not heard of it, here are a few hints what you can do with it. Once you have an alert set-up you get an instant email with the info you requested.

Set an alert for your own full name. Not important for SEO but very interesting to see who and where you are talked about.

Set an alert for your own site - see who is linking to you, is your site mentioned in a forum, and so on.

Set up an alert for a specific key word or phrase which comes up on blogs. Good if you want to comment on other blogs and mention your site.

Set an alert for some specific text on a certain page on your site - This can tell you if someone is copying your content.

Set an alert for your blog - I get an alert email within an hour of publishing a new post. Gives me peace of mind knowing Google is still indexing my blog

Set an alert for your competitors website - This helps you keeping an eye on who is linking to your competitor and giving a potential link partner for yourself.

Set an alert for a certain product you might be selling - This will give you the latest news about your product and therefore something you can write about on your site or on your blog. These alerts are very fast, meaning that this info pretty much brand new and so will be your post.

Set an alert for your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife or husband's full name - be careful, this might break your marriage!

Hope some of you might find this helpful. If you got some other ideas for an alert - please share.

I love the idea of setting up an alert for your website! I'm definitely doing that one. I have several set up now, but find that the one for my own name is pretty useless. There's an actress by the same name and I'm always getting alerts about R-rated pictures of her...

    Thanks!

PascalE has a good tip. ;-)

I was teaching about Google Alerts at a trade show in San Diego last weekend... Here is a further tip that I taught in my classes:

Create TWO alerts for each term/name... one with quote marks and one without quotations.

Also, remember that you need to verify each Google alert separately.

I love using this tool. I have alerts set for my name, for certain client names and for my niches so that I can stay up to date on news on that niche as well.
