Uploading book to kindle

I have been trying to upload my book to kindle so that I can preview it. It is a word file and is saved in rich text format, but it takes like hours before it uploads so that I can preview it. Is this normal?

the file is about 28 mb.

That's a pretty large file for a kindle book but it shouldn't take hours. Can you compress it a little bit? also, it is the .doc file format and not .docx, right?

I`ve uploaded many books to kindle and never had a problem, usually only takes a minute or two no matter what the format as kindle formats the file as it uploads

Amazon has a free download called the Kindle Previewer. Have you tried that? It allows anyone (PC or MAC) to preview their kindle masterpiece to see how it looks before they publish it.

If you need it, go to Amazon's "Kindle Publishing Programs" --->then click on "Download Kindle Previewer 1.61" at the very bottom of the page.

Maybe this will speed things up for you.

      Good luck,

Try using Calibre to convert it to epub and see if that works.

This is cut/paste from the Kindle Direct Publishing page on Amazon.
    Supported Formats

Kindle Direct Publishing lets you upload and convert your final draft from several formats. For best results, we recommend that you upload in DOC (.doc) or PRC (.prc) format. Be sure to read through the format you are using to upload below prior to publishing your work with KDP.
To learn more about the recommended PRC format, we suggest reading through our Simplified Guide to Building a Kindle Book. This guide walks you through editing a .doc in word, saving the file in a format accepted using Mobipocket Creator, and converting for optimum usability with KDP.
    We accept the following formats:
I hope that helps you as much as it did me. OpenOffice seems to be the best option as it can create Doc, Text, and PDF without any extra programs.
