How do you store passwords of different sites on your PC?

I use different passwords for different websites. So, I store all my passwords in a .txt file then .rar it with a password. This is the easiest and noobiest method I'm using to store passwords. Some people use password managers to store their passwords. Is there any good method you suggest me to store passwords? Thanks.

      I have heard lot about RoboForm.. Is it good to be used with all internet browsers..?

      There are few password storing application which helps you save password and it is very safe.. I think you should have a look at RoboForm..

      As of my best knowledge, never ever save passwords in your internet browser.. Because it will become easy for the hackers to steal your passwords.. If you have huge list of LogIns then you have to check a application called RoboForm..

      I am hearing LastPass for the 1st time.. I shall have a look at it.. Thanks for your reply..

    • You are right. If someone hacks your computer, they could get access.
      Is having your browser remember your logins and passwords safe? Firefox always asks if I want them to remember login and password.

  • I use roboform it lets you store 10 passwords for free and then you have to pay to add more than 10 passwords and its very easy to use.

      I suggest you not to save any of your passwords in any of the Internet Browsers as it will become easy for the Hackers to steal your passwords.. If you really want to save your password use Roboform or 1password or Lastpass, etc..
      Roboform is recommended..
  • don't just stress your self, adopt the use of roboform ..it works better for me and makes the workload easy ..or better still make use of one password
  • I choose to store them in files in ways that most people would probably not even suspect that they're passwords. Other times, I simply write them down on paper and keep it to myself.

  • I wanted to second(or third) LastPass. I've been using them since Steve Gibson (google him) blessed it a while back.

    The plugin makes it easy to maintain even multiple logins for sites, and even share those with other people(without giving them the password even).

      The easiest solution, one which is impossible to get hacked and costs just £1 / $1 is to go to your local pound / dollar shop and buy yourself an A5 alphabetical hardbound telephone directory book.

      So for example eBay would go under the letter E.

      Paypal obviously under the letter P.

      Etc etc.

      So then I just enter the name of the program or site on each corresponding page, U: = Username and P: = Password.

      Now if anything was to happen to the computer, I've always got a fail safe written backup of all my login details for the various sites I visit.

      A dead simple, low cost, fail safe answer to storing passwords 100% securely.

  • Roboform, plus I sync it with my iPhone and iPad , so can always have access to my logins.
  • Roboform! It's the shiznit, and with their web app you can use it on any machine that has internet access. You then login to the web app with your master password and can log into all your accounts.

      Hmmm.. I suggest you to use Roboform.. It not only saves your passwords, it evens auto fills the log in pages and all the passwords that you save will be backed with a master password..

      I feel this is a good idea.. But, I still suggest you to have a look at Roboform.. As it is extremely difficult for the hackers to hack the passwords saved in RoboForm and all that passwords which you save in Roboform is backed with a master password.. Check it out once it can be of great use to u..

      Sync is a good feature of Roboform.. Even i will try doing the same..

      Ur laziness will lead to your PC being hacked.. I highly recommend you to use Roboform.. Saving passwords in Roboform will take lesser time then writing the password..

  • i store most of my passwords in my head and if all else fails and i forget which sometimes happens then i just reset them lol
  • I use the paid version of roboform. Only the master password requires memorizing. Passwords can be synchronized online between various devices. For example, I have them working on an android smart phone.

    Another major advantage is, whenever you change computers, It is super easy to get all accounts to the new computer, even if you can't access the old one (using online sync).

      I would like to share another major feature where you can automatically Fill up the registration form of any site by using the Fill Form feature..

      Hmmm.. That is nice.. It will be easy for the hackers to guess your passwords.. There is a option in RoboForm which generated passwords and saves the passwords.. And all your passwords is backed by Master Password.. U have to only remember the master password.. Give a try to RoboForm..

    • I don't store them on my pc at all. Everything can get hacked, a rar password is not going to stop someone who's serious into hacking.
      I just write them down on a paper. Costs nothing beside the paper and is pretty safe, since I really doubt someone is going to break into my house to steal my passwords

    • I used Roboform a while back but lastpass is the way to go.
      Lastpass does all what roboform does + a lot more.

      With roboform you have to use Internet Explorer and can´t use Chrome.
      With lastpass you can use almost any browser and also can install it on your smartphone.
      You passwords are encrypted and synced between your PC`s and other devices.

      Also lastpass is free or if you want to use your smartphone it cost $1/m.

      Take lastpast and also use Dropbox. These two tools will greatly enhance your productivity starting into the new year.

    • I have been using LastPass for over a year now. It works really good.
  • The easiest way is to use one password. A password should never, ever be anything that can be found in a dictionary, it must contain at least upper- and lowercase letters and ideally also some punctuation. To memorize it, i'd advise it to make it meaningful by using first letters of a longer sentence. Something like this: "The Eiffel tower was built in 1889" which makes TEtwbi1889. To make it a little more secure, you could add some vartiation by adding a letter which is connected to the place: for excample Facebook password would be TEtwbi1889F, Google TEtwbi1889G etc.

    • The problem with a single password for everything -- even with minor tweaks -- is this: If one of those websites gets hacked (not your computer) and the hacker gets your password, he or she has a head start on accessing every other site you visit, online.

      I've been using a protected .txt file, but I'm going to check some of the software recommendations here.

    • That's just BAD advice.

      Even if you create a "strong" password that is unlikely to be cracked by dictionary checks, all you need is for your one password to be sniffed or obtained in any number of other malicious ways and BINGO, you have the master key to all your doors, locks and your safe.

      BTW, I also put another vote in for LastPass. Been using it for almost 2 years now and it's a great time saver as well as being pretty secure (nothing is 100% secure, but it sure is a lot better than having a single password, or lots of easy to remember, but crackable passwords)

      Please can someone explain all this for me - I think I kind of see what everyone's getting at (logins get "stored" within the websites I login to(?)).

      But, this thread has prompted me to realise that I'm likely confusing this with my directory of user & pw's, which I simply keep on a word doc - which appears to be a separate issue altogether...
    • I store passwords on my phone because it's a dang old phone and the Notepad on it is inaccessible by any program, which is actually kinda annoying.

      As far as coming up with good passwords, (and jotting them down on something else) come up with phrases like "I really like Warrior Forum and make a lotta $$!" or something retarded like that. Then compress it into numbers and letters. "Ir1WFamal$$!" using L33t to get numbers out of letters.

      Really awesome passwords, and if you jot down the phrase instead of the actual password, nobody knows it's a password.

    • I've used lastpass for 2 years now with no problems and highly recommend it.

      Couple of things to note.
      1. You can auto fill from lastpass so you can turn off browser password storage
      2. You can now have every password different (you know who you are!!)
      3. You can create very secure passwords as you don't have to remember them.
      4. I export my passwords regulary to make sure I have a text version that I can printout and save.
      5. makes changing passwords regulary an easy option

    • you'll never forget another password if you create a base combination of characters and numbers and simply modify the characters based some element of the website you are on. Remember though you must come up with the unique way of identifying the site that works for you, once you do you can store 100 or more in your head easily and they're very difficult to crack. It's free, fun and you can change them when ever you want. Once you get good at it you can add elements making it more difficult to crack.

    • Wow. I'm surprised no one has mentioned KeePass as it is open source, very secure and cross-platform as well as for mobile, so you can keep a copy with you and keep everything sync'd up.

  • I use Roboform. It's great and very easy to use. I tried few different password management software but I like roboform so I will stick with them.

    I use it with Chrome, Firefox, and Opera on Windows 7 systems as well as on my MacBook Pro. Works great. It worked for me even on my XP

      Let me explain.. RoboForm is an application which helps you save all kinds of passwords.. Once you install RoboForm it gets Syn with your Internet Browsers and 1st time when you Log in to any website RoboForm will ask you weather to save the password or not.. And once you hit save, the password will be saved.. From next time onwards when you visit the website RoboForm will use the saved password to Automatically log in to the website with out you manually entering the log in details..
      And all you passwords will be backed by a master password..
      Install in once and you will get to how it works..

  • I just store in Mozilla save passwords. Mostly I use one password for all or some set of passwords. if you feel storing in computer is not safe save in your phone and when needed use it but it is a bit difficult . For telephone directory it is better.

  • trust me i keep all my more than 50 passwords in my brain, more than 50 passwrods for my sites, emails, facebook accounts etc.
    there is a way i create my password and that works and i never forget password, even i forget i would know how would i have created and it works.

  • I use my iPhone, I write them in my note book that works for me.
  • I use a software app named PINs, and have been using it for many years.

    You will set a main password for the whole password storage file, then you can store your various into it, when you start PINs and open the password storage file, you need to enter your main password.

    Is it secure to have all you passwords saved on your computer? Probabably not, but just password protect them. I can't remember all my logins, so it's a necessary evil.
  • KeePass beats anything I've ever tried and it's free. Then I just set auto backups with Carbonite and I don't have to worry about ever losing my passwords.
  • I keep my passwords in an online storage site. Passpack. It's free. Triple layer security. And I don't need to store anything offline for backup should my PC gets formatted, stolen, or happened to be new.

  • I use Lastpass, and subscribe to the premium version so I can use it on my smartphone. Highly recommend especially if you are sharing your password with others such as outsourcers.
  • Keepass is the best in my opinion.

    However any storage of passwords on your own machine (even with a good password) is not 100% secure because as soon as someone has hold of your file and copies it to their own machine, they get unlimited attempts at trying to crack your password.

    If you are super paranoid then remember all of your passwords and make them unique :-).
