I think nobody can possibly know the answers to either of these questions with any reliability ...

... unless either "using Yahoo Answers" is the only thing they've done, or they've done a split-test of two otherwise entirely identical campaigns, one including and the other excluding Yahoo Answers (both rather unlikely scenarios, I think)?

It's all about attributing causation without quantitative evidence, isn't it?

I've been using Yahoo Answers pretty consistently, albeit on a small scale, for about two and a half years, to help a little with my promotion of 8 different niche sites, and even I can't begin to answer those questions.

I use it primarily to draw traffic to my site, not for the backlinks (my business model isn't really dependent on search engines anyway, and I'm always less interested in backlinking than most others here).

Without being able to quantify anything as you've asked, I've certainly found it, overall, very beneficial and worthwhile indeed, and have acquired many good and regularly buying customers that way. The traffic quality can be very good.

This activity has a real learning-curve.

It rewards patience, persistence and discipline. There's also some luck involved in it, I'm sure - but (like so many promotional activities which involve any sort of posting on sites one doesn't own) in the long term, the results are ultimately all about one's willingness and ability to add value to the sites one visits (Yahoo's, in this case).

People approaching it only from a perspective of "what can I get away with here?" and "what can I get out of it?" are unlikely indeed to be successful with it, and quite likely even to manage to get themselves banned there!

I've used Yahoo Answers, It can get you a lot of backlinks If you don't spam it. You need to not only answers questions on your niche but on many and don't put a source sometimes, otherwise you'll be flagged for spam real quick and get your account banned.

Yes, yahoo answers can do nice things when you are trying it with a good niche. otherwise, waste of time.

@Alexa Smith -- I appreciate your detailed reply! It is exactly what I was looking for when I made this post. And yes, you are correct that unless they are using YA exclusively in some sort of split test, they cannot answer the questions reliably. My aim was to see the replies based on the few questions. Heck if someone did do a split test on this, I think it would be some valuable data. I just thought I would throw the ol bait n hook and see who would bite.

2 Years is impressive. You mentioned that you use ClickBank to monetize. Are you directing traffic straight to the offer or through a gateway first for capture their email?

@Chris Ditfort – Have you used YA on your campaigns? If so, have you exclusively tested with only YA backlinks and what are your results?

@Yulia from DNP and @Steve72b – Do you have experience with nailing the “good niche”? If so, could you give us a walkthrough of your daily routine with YA? (ie. How many posts/day, etc…)

Always to my own site, so that I can opt them in (by offering a "free report", or whatever, in exchange for their email address). Nobody makes much by direct-linking to ClickBank products: these are products that sell almost exclusively "on the strength of the recommendation", and that requires having a relationship with the potential customer, not just redirecting them to a sales page. (I've never tried it, because I wouldn't sell anything that way, but I also strongly suspect that redirecting from Yahoo Answers to an affiliate or vendor offer would result in an immediate ban.)

I've used Yahoo Answers a lot in 2011; but mostly to troll. When I get into affiliate marketing (holy crap, I start next week!), I'll probably work it in on a small scale. If it seems to bring in the right kind of traffic for my niche, I'll keep it going. If not, back to making fun of people.

Several years ago I played with Yahoo answers. I answered something about the health niche and I added a link to one of my sites.

In about a day or two (I can't clearly recall) I got a spike in traffic and when I checked
it was coming from clicks in the yahoo answer link which was the first result in the serps
for it's keyword. It was interesting but I was new back then and just took it for granted.

I don't know if yahoo answers still ranks that high and that fast in the serps and I don't know if you can still easily add in links. My account there is around 7 years old I think.

That seems to be the standard for IM and is some good info for the newer members in the community. Some people have multiple lvl 2 accounts and they just rotate answering questions. If they get banned, oh well, they can just make or buy some more. Though it is not a whitehat way of doing things..

I used Yahoo Answers in the past to grow my list. I'm still using this technique from time to time.
