Depends on your purpose for having the domain. For branding, shorter: google.com, squidoo.com, bing.com, etc.

For typical niche affiliate sites, which rely more or less exclusively on organic search rankings for traffic, long tail keywords that are not very competitive work best. Having an exact match domain for a long tail still carries lots of SEO weight.

Depends on your goals. Usually longtail domains look a little odd and don't bring much traffic. However, if you can get big commissions off of whatever you are promoting.

Personally, I target longtails only in the blog posts of my niche sites. I tend to make my site an authority site and all posts into little nets that grab longtail visitors.

Short tail domains are best in my opinion though. Hard to come by but it's possible.

It's all about objective... We rarely use short any more unless its for a specific business we are driving long tail keyword traffic too.

Short Tail Keyword - Business Site or Money Site

Long Tail Keyword - Provides amazing search traffic and if the keyword research is done correctly it will be easy to rank #1 for as well provide a great source of viable traffic to the Short Tail.

Also we use Long Tail Keyword EDM = Exact Domain Match as a source of Advertising Income by ranking the sites and selling Exclusive Advertising to one client in that niche.

It's always funny when these types of posts come up... WHY? Because if you read through threads a lot, this is a daily occurence by newbies as too WHAT IS IT?

The Long Tail Keyword is our Bread and Butter for our Business. Traffic equals prospects equals conversions and money.

There's actually no such thing as a "short tail domain" because there's no such thing as a "short tail" (except perhaps on some rare breeds of cats?).

The expression "long tail" comes from something on a graph. It has no "short" equivalent. The counterpart to "long tail" is "high frequency" or "high search popularity" or whatever. Not "short" anything.

It has nothing to do with the length of the keyword itself. I'm just clarifying this for the benefit of anyone who imagines that 3/4 word expressions are necessarily "long tail keywords" or "long tail domains" (this is far from the truth) whereas single words are "short tail domains/keywords" (which also isn't necessarily so).

The little graph of frequency functions shown below illustrates what "long tail" refers to ...
