Is it just me, or is this the norm....?

You create a WSO, you make some sales, then you get Warriors who want to promote it for you as an affiliate, you check them out, approve them if suitable.....then they do nothing!
Is this the norm, or does it happen regularly?

Answers on a postcard please.lol

    Hi Kevin,

I think it is quite common as there is nothing that you can do if the affiliate is not motivated to promote it.

But nonetheless, just keep going forward and all the best

    Shiny object syndrome...

Initial motivation, very little follow through.

Don't worry though, it doesn't hurt to have tons and tons of affiliates even if only a few of them make good sales for you. Ultimately, focus your attention on the ones who are converting for you, and give them all the time and motivation they need.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

Speaking personally...yes. This is completely normal.

I get contacted all of the time by product owners looking for affiliates.

Typically, I will review the product and then if it looks decent and I think it works, then I put it at the end of the line...first come, first serve.

In many cases, I simply never get around to it because of being so busy and in many cases, the product really doesn't match my list profile...

    There are many reasons...

Affiliates are like articles in article directories...there are armies of us, but good ones are rare gems...

Yes, I definitely agree with the comment above about the 80/20 rule. It is only a very small handful of affiliates that will bring in all the sales. The rest are just those who post a link on their WSO review blog or website or Facebook page -- the kind of people who are lucky to make you one sale. Or even worse they just send a whole lot of cheap and junk traffic to your offer in the hope they will make some sales.

I try not to approve most of these people because all they do is screw up your WSO stats and make it even less appealing for the real affiliates to promote your offer.

In this context, I think the 80/20 principle is probably an understatement, actually.

If you ask ClickBank vendors (as I do, fairly regularly, among my "other little questions" ), the ones with decent sales volumes will all tell you that 10% of their affiliates produce 90% of their affiliate-referred sales, and the ones with really big sales volumes will all tell you that 5% of their affiliates produce 95% of their affiliate-referred sales.

I've even heard it alleged that girls wear 20% of our shoes 80% of the time, but of course that one is ludicrous nonsense ...

        20%? That many?

I'm having a garage sale consisting of ladies shoes, most of them in "as new" condition. (I think I may have to use my neighbours garage however...I'll keep you all posted)

What do you expect? Some people's greatest skill is laziness, which naturally rules out all others.

Yeah... it stinks almost as much as that virtual fish you slapped me in the face with last time I said it to you.

I'm afraid this will happen and I'm actually guilty of doing this myself for some WSO's :S. Sometimes I'll request to be approved to promote and then just totally forget about the request I made a few days down the line. It doesn't say anything about your product when affiliates don't follow through with a promotion...Maybe something else came up or they (like me) just totally forgot .

    Hi Kevin,

Try this > Train your affiliates and give them an incentive(s) to promote.

Honestly, when I first started recruiting affiliates they were seasoned Warriors. The majority already knew how to promote. Those that did not know how to promote were trained and given the tools.

It might make a positive difference for you.

Are you sure they aren't doing anything? Maybe they are promoting but just not making sales. Maybe they're even sitting there wondering why they aren't making sales and think something is wrong with the offer.

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss affiliates, since no one starts at the top.

I had an affiliate program for my business some years ago where I was charged a fee by the software provider based on the number of affiliates in the program.

I had over 2500 affiliates and only around 30-40 who made sales which took them above the $50 payout threshold. Needless to say I switched software providers pretty quickly when my monthly fees got upwards of $200

So yep, if 5% or more of your affiliates are active you're doing pretty well.

    Hi Kevin,

You asked for a postcard answer. I would like to add..

..There are a lot of unknowns to affiliate marketing that took me some time to learn from Affiliate Managers that do it for a living, i.e. companies that manage the sellers affiliate business..

.. and the best advise I was given was to run a 'Closed Affiliate Program' on high ticket items. The next best advise I received was to run a 'Public Affiliate Program' on low end items.

Again, I realize you asked for postcard answers, but its not that simple if you want to earn a 'substantial income' through affiliates.

The postcard answer to a substantial income through affiliates is.. get to the level that enables you to hire a professional affiliate manager.
