Your source for this? I see threats of a ban from back in January, and that India has banned pages that are deemed inappropriate or offensive; but not the whole site.

So where exactly did you hear this?

It is unfair to cite post count as a reason for ignoring news. Everyone is being a bit glib about this one.

I've been watching the news on this one - and as there are links posted I"m not going to go back and dig up what I read. Yes, they are working on net censorship in India. Should we be so surprised? We are even fighting against it in the US. Australians are also being given headaches over it. I would say that we need to expect about every gov on the planet to be at least toying with ideas of how to keep us uninformed and quiet. At this date and age, it shouldn't come as that much of a surprise.

To our Indian pals here -- Godspeed fighting against it. Every country that falls to censorship clears a path for others to follow. Too bad we can't say "What happens in China, stays in China."

I'm thinking it was more of that coupled with this signature line:

I have an email list containing 100,000,000,000 email adresses and all are targeted costumers. If u are interested to buy the list PM. me.
I'd be a little hesitant to believe myself, especially with no news on the threat since January...

Maybe so. I've read about it several times so it seemed more real than hyped controversy. Perhaps if I'd never heard or seen the issue elsewhere I'd have been a bit more concerned about links, too. Haven't seen any of his other posts. I was just not in the frame of mind to decide on the value of the post because of post count.

As far as it goes - if it were my country, I'd be extremely ticked off about it too. I'm in America and I know we don't appreciate it when our gov threatens such actions - and we don't always post a link to voice our anger or concern.

It's all good - if someone comes in with an issue that I haven't heard and talks without reference, I will ask for them as well. I'm not so sure the post count will be my motivation for doing so though.

          This stuff happened in Jan-March.
Then the govt called a meeting with FB and google and FB agreed to remove objectionable items....all sorted now...

I think op was sleeping for 4 months and just woke up now.

I'm always having a great day! It does lend a bit more credence to the "Joe is a writer" theme though; and that always helps lol.

Well, I didn't bother with the video; but here is the mentioned January 13th article that tells of the threat. Nothing new has come about since (or at least I can't find it), so I'm guessing it is just rumor at this point.

I had a look for news reports substantiating this, might be a bit premature, there was this report in January:
"The Delhi high court today warned social networking site Facebook India and search engine Google India that websites can be “blocked” like in China if they fail to devise a mechanism to check and remove objectionable material from their web pages."

    From Vetified March 13, 2012
"Facebook.com is inaccessible from 12th march 2012 in india through some isp providers. they banned facebook.com i guess cause of some political censorship issue they banned facebook in india. You can still acess facebook by using these URL’s:
    0.facebook.com

    touch.facebook.com
    0.facebook.com"

Much of the mention is on forums, not that much in western news.

( I recall a proposed list of censored text message words that leaked in India )

A 9 month old report of gov replacement plans

Blocked "Everybody draw Mohammed Day!" page

If it does get banned, I wonder if you're able to use a premium proxy to continue using it? But still, I guess most of the Indian population would not be on there, which would be a bummer if they are your target audience.

    Guys ,

I am from India. And want to tell you this is half truth.

Government warn social media about some objectionable material and tell them government can ban them if they don't listen.

Afterwords government people confirm that they don't have objection on total social networking they have objection on some posts / material on orkut/facebook/twitter & other sites.

These sites are ready to cooperate with government for right now. They have started to removing the posts.

So an per my knowledge there is no chance of Facebook being shutting down in India at this moment.

    Thanks

From what I'm reading while researching this, it mostly concerns insults towards religious and political figures. They are seriously against anything that insults both the Christian and Muslim faiths, and images such as a Photoshopped naked politician.

Actually it was related to some Anti Govt stuffs posted on Internet which created all these banning & Penal actions, coz many Indians use the social platform for their march against corruptions & other issues related to common Indians which were on high recently in India.

This was not only concentrated to FB but signals were also sent to Twitter & others too.

While some really objectionable material (which really should not be posted) were removed by them & for other instructions they submit the reasons that peoples are free to post contents & degree of objectionable contents varies for all, so they will continue.

There was row some time, but when social platform removed that very objectionable content, the life going on..........so CARRY ON

That all makes sense. I would bet that after what happened in Egypt, governments around the world understood pretty clearly that the information age was not good for business or the status quo ... I would also bet that the military dictatorship in charge in Egypt will not let Facebook create another, umm, disturbance.

Sorry but as an Internet Marketer who sells using Paypal, I will not be losing any sleep over this. It has nothing to do with being racist however it's a well known fact that a lot of these third world countries are responsible for a large proportion of refunds, at least in my case they are. This has a lot to do with the currency value differences between countries but whatever the reason, I'm not too concerned about this change at all.
