A Shining Example to us All

There has just been an item on the news, here in the UK, about a young girl aged 11 years, who has started a successful business selling sweets (candy) to her schoolmates. Essentially, she is buying sweets in bulk and then undercutting the local shops to win her trade.

In order to win the necessary financial backing to raise the capital to buy her stock, she did a Powerpoint presentation for her financial backer - her Mum. Her Mum was only prepared to back the project if she did it properly so she now maintains a Spreadsheet for stock control and accounting purposes.

It is an amazing story. Here is a young girl, with no business experience at all, now with a thriving business and making a small fortune because she did what so many internet marketers fail to do. She was able to define her market and then address the question of competitive advantage i.e. she was able to successfully answer the question: why should people buy from me?

A shining example to us all.

Do you happen to have some links to this? I'd like to study this case further...

    Amazing story. Thanks Will.

On a more humorous note, those in the dentistry business would love her too! haha

I bet her mom is one smart cookie, I wouldn't be surprised if she is experienced in business as it's obvious this young girl has learned a few things. It's amazing what your kids can do if you just give them the room to be creative and believe in their abilities!

I love hearing stories like this. My daughter is 2.5 years old right now, and there are years of joy (yeah I know and pain!) ahead. I can't wait!!

This illustrates something many parents neglect when raising thier chilldren.

Not enough parents teach thier children about finance and business.

Heck, most kids think money just magically appears.

Teaching kids not only how finance works, but how they can generate money on thier own is priceless information that will empower them and that they can use forever.

Many kids sell sweets to other kids in school, however, it tends to be banned by most schools due to the healthy eating campaigns.

It does tend to get banned. But there is always before school and after the last bell rings I used to sell candy too when I was in elementary school and then moved on to selling football cards in highschool.

Great story. My 10 year old had his first day as an 'employee' on his Mum's new business last Saturday...and he got tips (all innocent fun...not really hard work) and loved it. Now he wants to have his own business.

    Hi Will,

Thanks for posting this as it always makes me feel good to see parents
taking interest in their children and teaching them "How To" do it right.

A year or so a go I posted a similar experience with my Granddaughter on
the old Warrior Forum and she really impressed me.

Here is the old thread if your interested ( Proud Papal )
The Warrior Forum - 7Year old Makes $766 in 11 Hours - Taking Action!

She presently has a few ventures that allow her to basically print money on
    demand.

It really amazes me how children can Take the actions that are required
to get what they want but most Adults tend to get bogged down over
thinking things and fail to take the actions required to accomplish their
    goals.

    Thanks again for the post!

    Have a Great Day!

      Hey Michael

I actually remember reading that post at the time. I thought it was very inspiring. You know, I think there's a book in this - a collection of these stories would make an interesting read for many people. Another one to put on my To-Do List I think.

Will, I think you may be on to something...lol

Seriously, I love reading about young success stories and I'm sure many
other parents do also. Everyone would like to see their children to become
successful and would jump at any chance to help make it happen.

Not only are stories of this nature inspiring they tend to pull on heart
strings that motivate parents to take actions to help their children
        succeed.

My very first motivating factor was my Grandmother giving me $100 to
start my own business. I was 11yrs old and I wanted to start an TV repair
shop...lol She helped me get my first customer and I had no ideal how to
        fix the TV...lol, Go figure!

When I failed she told me I needed to learn electronics so that I could
        acquire my dream.

Today I am an Electronics Engineer and have seen more things than most
in the same field being a x-US Navy Crypto Tech.

I miss her and now I have my own Grandchildren. I also ask them their
opinions of what they would do in certain situations just to get an
un-biased opinion and to also correct their train of thought before a
        derailment can occur...lol

That works for all of us and I respect parents that interact with their
children. Today, Parents are so busy making ends meet that they spend
very little family time so it kinda explains why teens are the way they are
now in many cases. I'm rambling now so I'll stop.

One last note about your new venture....GO FOR IT!

        Have a Great Day!
        Michael

    Link please!

Well power to her elbow, but this type of thing isn't good for business in general. She can undercut the local shop because she has no overheads, and no real need to make much profit. It's like the ebayers working from home making a pound profit on a twenty pound item. Of course they are cheaper, but not everything should come down to price. Just playing Devils Advocate, but I do think there is some truth to it.
