Same here...IMO it is a big waste of time. No true proof that it helps with SEO ranks (even tho you get do-follow links) and further more I have never seen really anyone boldly proving a positive ROI from their time invested into Pinterest.

There is a common trend with new websites nowadays...First people go all crazy about how great it is, then discuss about how to scale it up, then come on forums and cry about how they got banned and eventually realize that it wasn't really as big as they assumed it to be.

And this guy, the spammer, better have eyes in the back of his head. I read an article in the WSJ the other day about Pinterest and spammers trying to make $ from the site.
Pinterest is very aware of this and are applying resources to put a stop to it. It might work in the beginning but you are liable to get caught at some point and your account banned from the site.
Since Pinterest is an invitation only site, they want to protect the integrity and user experience. I would too if I were them.

I imagine the owners of Pinterest don't think it is a waste of time when they are checking their bank balances.

In seriousness, I think it's a site more suitable for promotion of physical products. The site itself is a marketing gold mine waiting to be tapped for the simple fact that people shop with their eyes.

For example, if you were to take 100 people and have each one choose between 3 banners displaying meals of the same genre. 1 and 3 were gourmet meals, written with amazingly descriptive and complimentary text but no images. 2 was a slightly lower quality meal with no description, only a very well taken picture that showcases the meal. In my experience, 2 will win out in almost every instance.

Waste of time, they are very proactive about preventing spam and now that you can only have 1 pin show up on the main categories per day it's pretty pointless for marketing.

I set up a pinterest page over a month ago....I now have nearly 2000 followers, have sold a few dozen fiverrs and mycheapjob gigs to pin things for people.

I get 100 hits per day on average to my sites. I make sales.

I have seen pinterest pages rank up in the SERPS...a few of mine should be landing there anytime.

The beautiful thing about pinterest is this....

You pin things (of your products) and when other people repin them....their friends then repin it and it just gets floated around.

The really wonderful thing about pinterest is it is filled with people that don't know what they are doing...

So I will take things that are popular, pin them into my account, then CHANGE the board and pin to optimize it (with my own URL and also correct keyword phrases) and then I send that back out to my 2k followers....

Now my info is pinned into popular pins.

As I stated earlier in the post, this method is bringing in 100 hits per day after only 1 month

100s of unique visits or "hits". Big difference. And is this referring traffic, just from pinterest alone?

How are you accurately measuring this? Do you know with 100% certainty that this is the reason your rankings are improving?

All hits are unique hits.

Obviously I wasn't clear when I posted...

Basically there are 18 million people that are "posting" pictures. The easiest way to "get in" on the pinterest traffic is to REPIN the most popular pictures and then change the url of the pin to your product.

After you do this you meander around pinterest, like some pics, comment on some pics, pick up some followers, they look over your boards, they REPIN things and it gets sent out into what I call the "pool" again.

When your pins are out for others to see, people repin them and it starts to get passed around. I don't know how to better explain it.

Pinterest traffic has poor conversion. This is typical of social media, but pinterest is worse. It reminds me of digg effect traffic back in the day - if you know what we mean. About a boost to PR juice we are not so sure. Time will tell as they say...

Frankly, I'm sick & tired of seeing every useful web property be RAPED by spammers, network marketers & internet marketers. Just go away and don't bother the Pinterest development team.

All the time they have to spend combatting spammers & marketers is time they are wasting - it takes them away from interacting with their users and providing a better service.

If you really want to make money 'on' Pinterest, figure out how to help people who are using it... and quit trying to game every new & cool web app that comes along.

And here's a quick test to see if you're a spammer:

Answer yes or no: "Are you the source of unsolicited & unwanted messages & information on Pinterest?"

You may want to read the Pinterest TOS and check with a lawyer before running with that strategy.

First, not all of Pinterest images are there with permission from the copyright holder. Re-pinning and then redirecting the URL of an image may put you in the cross-hairs of a lawsuit.

Second, the Pinterest TOS requires that you abide by the TOS, Acceptable Use Policy and Pin Etiquette. Pin Etiquette suggests you link to the original source. Re-pinning to an unexpected source may cause a few user complaints of your account.

Third, some of those "popular images" are there because they've been professionally marketed. For instance, you can hire the firm 97thFloor to do a viral Pinterest campaign. I'm sure if someone were willing to pay to get a picture to go viral they won't take too lightly to having you steal the traffic they've in essence "paid for".

It's safer (and frankly more ethical) to "riff the pin" then repin with the riff link in the comments than to redirect the link altogether.

Another question, how are the owners making money? Is it through emailing their members? I don't see any ads on there. The place looks like a site that just recycled all the odd pics you used to email your friends 5 years ago, pictures of shoes and recipes.

I'm not exactly sure but I think they're relying on investors at this point.

A few weeks back they were adding affiliate links to products which had been pinned without any affiliate links attached. But with all the bad press they stopped.

I actually get a lot of quality referral traffic from Pinterest on a regular basis, more so than facebook, twitter, digg or any other social network. Pinterest can be a great tool if used right and yes it does take a little TLC to make it work for you but when it does work and you get some followers sharing your content all over Pinterest it makes it worthwhile.

I deleted my account. I thought it was fun and interesting and it drove some traffic to one of my sites, but I don't have enough photos that I could use without copyright infringement to make it worthwhile.

Sooner or later this copyright issue with Pinterest is going to bite some people hard.

I don't spam the crap out of Pinterest or use any bots. Everything I do is manual. I make money two ways: sending people to blogs with adsense and I do make a little bit from affiliate programs, but most of my money is from the adsense. I think it's worth it because I make $!

I think it will depend heavily on what niche you are in and what products you promote, like with most traffic sources. There will be people that can make a traffic source work and those that can't. If there are spammers that can make pinterest work, there must be non-spammers that can make it work also.

This "weirdo" site will soon become a goldmine for many Internet marketers. It's relatively new compared to Facebook and Twitter so most IMers don't know how to make money from it - yet. That may change in the future, though. Pinterest has lots of potential and as long as it doesn't go the Myspace way, it will soon be a massive Internet marketing tool alongside Facebook and Twitter.

In my experience it doesn't convert as well as Facebook or Twitter, but when you manage to get loads of traffic from it (which is totally possible), that will make up for the conversion rate. As long as it's still quite new, it will be relatively easy to get a load of traffic from it. It just needs a bit of thinking to make it converting (target your offer to the audience).
