Techie question re wordpress

I've got a wordpress blog and wanted to add a non-wordpress website to its subdomain - is this possible?

I uploaded the files to the subdomain but they then appeared as a list in the subdomain url , so my guess is that it's not possible but another opinion would be useful.

    It is not possible, because WP uses a different system and not the html files. So you must create a pages/posts in WP and copy there your content from that website.

      You need to create an index page in the sub-domain file and link to that from your main, Wordpress domain. The index page should be either an html or php file

      oh course you can have another non-WordPress website in a sub-domain of your domain! :rolleyes:

      As Annie explained above, you must have an index HTML or PHP file in your sub-domain at the very least and link accordingly.

        Copy all the files that you need to display in sub-folder for that subdomain then name the homepage of your sub domain as index.html or index.php.

        On a side note, you should put a blank index page in any directory you don't want people snooping in. When someone puts in a url without a page name (example.com/subdirectory), most server software will first look for a 'home page' for the directory. If it finds one, it will display it even if there's no content. If it does not find a home page or index page, it will display a list of the files in that directory. I believe that is what happened to the OP.

        It's not foolproof, but it helps keep the honest people honest.

    The easiest option here is to place either the WP site or the HTML site in to a sub-folder on the same domain.

    For example, what you would need to do is install the blog software on your server, into a subfolder (for example yoursite.com/blog).
    You can then create a link on your HTML site navigation menu that points to the blog. This would make the blog be part of your overall website. You can also add the blog to your sitemap.


    Working the other way works too. ie, placing your HTML site is a sub folder and creating links from the blog to the HTML site.

    Which you keep on the web site root (ie not in a folder) will depend on which part of the site (html or blog) you want the website visitors to see first.

    To take this to the next step would be to have multiple sub folders. Each one could have a Blog or a HTML site in it. This would ge a good way of siloing different but loosely related subjects on the one domain.

    The OP was asking about SUBDOMAIN and you are talking about subfolders...

    Say your Wordpress blog is on DOMAIN.COM
    You can add another site, any kind of site on SUBDOMAIN.DOMAIN.COM
    or you can add it in a folder such as DOMAIN.COM/WEBSITE

    Just make sure it has a valid index.html or index.htm file if it is an html site or index.php if it is a php site in the subdomain or folder or you will just get a list of files, as you have already.
