How to find where your target customers hang out?

How do I go about finding out the websites where a specific target group surf online?

Let's say I'm targeting men in their 20s or women in their 50s, is there a website where I can put in the parameters of my "target demographic" and they would tell me what websites they go to and what keywords they like to search for?

Let me know.

Thanks,
Louis

  • I don't know if you can do it the way you stated, but you can go to quantcast and look at stats for a particular website and see the demographics you are referring to.

Alexa.com will give you some of that info

Google Searches help too. Search for things like:

      <your product> forums

      <your service> groups

      etc.

Bookmark anything that looks promising and then use Alexa as braincandy7 suggested to see more detailed info about those sites, foruyms, groups, etc.

Head over to Google Ad Planner and input a popular web address within your niche and the Ad Planner will not only list their demographics, but also other hot hangouts. Pretty useful.

      Hope that helps.

Thanks for the idea, it's not bad... But it still feels like a shot in the dark with every inquiries. It's too bad there isn't a website or software that can do this. That'd be a good idea!

        Thanks for the help guys!

I'm selling anything under the sun. I'm was just thinking out-loud on a way to find websites with very specific demographic to tailor my marketing to them... Whatever it is I'm trying to sell.

Like I said in the first post, if I have a product for guys about e.g. "building muscles" then I would target men in their 20s to 40s, right? How can I go about finding all the places where they hang out most and what other keywords they search for.

For some reason I thought there was a software or website that did this, maybe I'm just confusing Alexa or something like that... Maybe Spyfu.

I don't know of doing it in a way that you mentioned where you mark out the demographics first, but this is they I know how to do it.

The difference is, they way I recommend, you choose the niche first and then you figure out what demographics like that niche.

Lets use your example, 'building muscle.'

Type in "how to build muscle+forums" into google.

Mark down the top 10 forums that show up.

then go to quantcast.com and insert the url's for those forums.

What quantcast will do is tell you the
age, marriage status, education, approximate income, traffic, of that target market. and it will provide the keywords that people type in to find those sites, and will suggest others sites that that target market visits.

It will list blogs, and forums they visit also.

But this is choosing the niche first, then finding out the demographic.

        Don't know if that helps

Thanks but I already knew about that. What I'm wondering is if there's a site where you can put gender and age range and they spit out the most popular sites for those demographics. I think it would be a good site if someone gets around to build it.

if your selling a product for men who want to build muscles, or anything for that matter.
here's a way you can be sure to alwasy be targeting your market.

Go to the google keyword tool and type in muscle building, grab all of the most searched and relevant keywords.

then type all of them into google, click on the top 3 sites for each keyword and see which sites sell or rent ad space.

Then simply buy an ad and place it on the site, you will always be targeting your market directly, instead of relying on just demographics. This will be the most direct way and will also be the highest converting way.

You can only really target something based on age, on non related sites if you have a super huge budget in the hundreds of thousands.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing but even with muscle building for example you still have a lot of women on those sites. What if you could find a website that's overwhelmingly men in their 20s to 40s, even if it's not related to muscle building, and test your marketing there?

Like I said, I'm just thinking out-loud here.

    <product type/name> forums
    or
    forums about <product type/name>

Check the domain name of any authority site in quantcast.com. It won't be perfect. In fact there isn't any single site that can give you a complete report. But you'll get some idea.

also google: "facebook" "your keyword or niche" "magazine". You'll see magazine pages of facebook that people are crazy about visiting. Why? nobody knows. People just do. They respond to whistle blown by the magazine page wall posts. You'll have an idea what people are more interested in.

google: "your niche or your keyword" "livefyre". You'll get results of blogs that use livefyre plugin for commenting. The big benefit of livefyre is that it returns numbers of people reading or visiting the page in real time. The more people visiting a page, shows the interest of people.

Find forums in your niche and check two things - 1. What's their traffic volume in compete.com and quantcast.com and 2. Do they allow signature link or not. Signature links attracts other marketers. Presence of active and old marketers with sig link shows that there are buyers there.

    I hope these help.

Concentrating on your own niche is the only way to keep the flow of traffic coming to your site.

Not only forums but additionally you can look for blog sites, web 2.0 sites, social channels, participating in groups, using your list will also help your move....

Louisgeorges, you should know who your target market is. You should know how they think, how they feel and even what they had for breakfast.. hehe.

But I see what you are getting at. Unfortunately it is not that simple. There is no one tool.

I have a database for this type of thing.

And other way is put your banner on related blog and forum, this way you can also get targeted traffic, as your banner would say about your specifications so only those people would click the banner who need it.

Thanks for all the tips, I'm sure a lot of readers learned a few new tricks.

As for me, I pretty much knew all those things already. And I wasn't looking for a sort of, work around, shot in the dark, maybe you'll get lucky trick of doing this. I really just want to know if there's a site or software built to do EXACTLY what I mentioned in my first post. And from what I'm reading on this thread, I guess not.

But I must admit the little brainstorming we got going here is very entertaining and useful. So if you want to keep posting the little tricks you use to hunt down your target audience, please do so!

    Good hunting!

If your pockets are deep enough, you could try contacting Nielsen Media Research. They're known for the TV ratings, but they're getting into Internet research as well.
